Fusion Energy Sciences
Advisory Committee
The
Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory
Committee (FESAC) has been
Chartered
pursuant to Section 14(a)(2)(A) of
the Federal Advisory Committee Act
Public Law 92-463, and Section
101-6.1015, title 41 Code of Federal
Regulations. The committee provides
independent advice to the Director
of the Office of Science on complex
scientific and technological issues
that arise in the planning,
implementation, and management of
the fusion energy sciences program.
A new charter was signed in
August
2007, and will be in effect for 2
years.
The
Committee members are drawn from
universities, national laboratories,
and private firms involved in fusion
research. A list of current FESAC
members and links to a brief
biography of each member can be
found at
Members
and Members Bios.
The
current members were appointed on
June 24, 2008, and will serve a
two year term as Special Government
Employees during their work on FESAC.
The
Director of the Office of Science
charges the committee to provide
advice and recommendations on
various issues of concern to the
fusion energy sciences program. The
Committee conducts its business in
public meetings, and submits reports
containing its advice and
recommendations to the Department.
Notices
of upcoming FESAC meetings are
provided in the Federal Register at
least two weeks before the scheduled
date of the meeting.
Current
FESAC
Charge(s)
-
FESAC has been
charged to review the
Strategic Plan Overview that was
prepared by OFES in response to
a request by the House of
Representatives Appropriations
Committee in its report on the
Energy and Water Appropriations
Bill for FY 2009, and provide
its comments to the Director of
the Office of Science in a
letter report format no later
than January 23, 2009. OFES will
take into consideration the
FESAC comments in its efforts to
complete the Plan and provide it
to Congress by the March 1, 2009
requested deadline.”
-
FESAC
has received a
charge
to work with the High Energy Density
Laboratory Plasma (HEDLP) community
to provide information to the
Department that will form part of
the basis for the development of a
scientific roadmap for the HEDLP
program during the coming decade.
By October 2008, FESAC should
identify the scientific
opportunities that when pursued
would make a joint HEDLP program
funded by the Office of Science and
the National Nuclear Security
Administration exciting and
challenging, and holds the
possibility of putting the United
States in a world leadership
position in this field of research.
The panel dealing with this
charge is chaired by Dr. Ricardo Betti of the
University of Rochester and a
full list of Panel members is
available
here.
The panel has established an
interactive website at
http://fsc.lle.rochester.edu/hedlp/hedlp.php.
The website describes the
panel's plan for addressing the
charge and provides instructions
on providing input to the panel.
All input to the panel will be
posted on the website. The
panel plans to hold a public
meeting August 25-27 in the
Washington, DC area.
-
“FESAC has been
charged to
establish a Committee of
Visitors (COV) that will assist
FESAC in assessing the efficacy
and quality of the process used
by OFES to solicit, review,
recommend, monitor and document
awards and declinations, and the
breadth, depth, and quality of
the resulting program
portfolio. FESAC with help from
the COV will provide an
evaluation of the program’s
national and international
standing. The COV will review
all elements of the Fusion
Energy Sciences program and
report its final results to DOE
by the end of April 2009. The
selection of COV members is on
going and the list of members
will appear here when it is
completed.
FESAC Documents and Meeting Dates
Generally, reports written by FESAC
are published by the Department of
Energy and given a DOE/SC report
number. Each report contains
the DOE charge to the committee, the
letter from the committee
transmitting the report on the
charge to the Director of SC and
providing any comments from FESAC on
the contents of the report, and the
report of the FESAC Panel when a
Panel has been named to carry out
the charge.
Reports on the Fusion Energy
Sciences Program not produced by
FESAC may be found on the
Program
News
page.
