Publishing Arts ensures that your Forest Service unnumbered publications meet editorial, design, policy, and other standards and procedures as specified by the USDA Visual Management Guide, Forest Service manual (FSM 1630 - Publishing and Related Activities), and handbook (FSH 1609.11 - Publications Management Handbook). Another good reference to review is the Publishing Arts Style Guide , developed to help Forest Service staff produce quality, timely, cost effective communication.
These publications include NEPA and land management planning documents, brochures, posters, general audience articles, internal communication pieces, briefing papers, and other documents that do not present results, analyses, or conclusions of formal studies or that are not original reports. These publications don’t have specific approval forms or review processes to complete before submitting them to Publishing Arts.
Things are a little different for numbered Forest Service publications…
For these, Publishing Arts ensures that the documents meet the editorial, design, policy, and other standards and procedures established by the Office of Communication and Forest Service research stations. Publications include technical guides, research papers, and formal studies, and they receive nationwide distribution.
These publications need advance approval to publish from either the Office of Communication (FS-1600-6) or the research station. After approval, Publishing Arts can complete any or all needed publishing services and facilitate the publication process. Please complete any technical or peer reviews or other specific review requirements before submitting the document to Publishing Arts.
For non-Forest Service publications…
Other outside publications may have specific standards and conventions that you will need to follow. Consult the journal or other outside outlet for their requirements.
