Genetically Modified Foods: Breeding Uncertainty Genetically Modified Foods: Breeding Uncertainty

Charles W. Schmidt

Abstract

Genetically modified (GM) crops first appeared commercially in the 1990s. Since then, their progress has been checkered. Public opposition, perhaps most pronounced in Europe, has led several large agrobiotech companies to curtail their GM projects or at least move their test fields. One main concern regarding GM foods is that they could be a source of food allergens ; although crops are currently tested for allergenicity before marketing, more postmarketing surveillance is needed to confirm their lack of adverse health effects. Proponents of GM crops claim the plants are a boon to farmers, and are making headway in increasing the acreage of such crops around the world.
