I am a program officer at the Altman Foundation and we have several terrific health literacy projects that work at the systemic level and are meant to be replicable. Specifically, these projects include: health literacy curricula that is used in the adult literacy/ESL system (it is skill-based not content-based...e.g., focused on key navigation skills for example rather than modules on cancer or other conditions); a prenatal health literacy program that engages women in their care more effectively and is meant to promote better pregnancy and birth outcomes (it includes a low-literacy version of the What To Expect When You Are Expecting guide); a health literacy program that targets parents waiting in pediatric health centers and builds off Reach Out and Read programs (which are national programs); and a new initiative in the area of plain language medication information for use in pharmacies, in partnership with the Pharmacy Society of NY and a local school of pharmacy.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like any additional information on any of the above.

Hello all,

An insurance company that is a client of mine wants to make a big difference
in health literacy. Beyond looking "in-house" at their own communications,
this insurance company is also inviting a number of organizations and
individuals to join them in a statewide initiative.

They asked me what other parts of the country have done or are doing on a
big scale like this. Naturally, I thought folks on NIFL-Health might know.
I'd like to hear what your state, region, or community is doing about health
literacy and learn about the successes and struggles of this initiative.

Of note, I am giving a presentation to this company on Saturday and so
appreciate a quick turn-around with your answer. Please either tell us all
by replying to this message or respond just to me at
helen@healthliteracy.com.

As always, thanks!
~Helen
