Glossary of Terms


 
Who can use the online registration system?

In general, most businesses will be able to register a business with this OneStop Business Registration service. However, please be aware that you will be unable to register your business online if any of the following apply:


OneStop Business Registration is designed to register new businesses in Utah and currently does not allow the adding of another business location to an existing Utah business. To add another business location to an existing Utah business, you should:
  1. Call the Workforce Information Division at the Utah Department of Workforce Services, 801-526-9785. They register various worksites in Utah and enter information into their database for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They will want to know your new worksite address, principal business activity at that site, an Unemployment Insurance number (if you have one), and other similar information.
  2. Contact the Utah State Tax Commission. Add a new business location to your account by completing Tax Commission Form TC-69B. You can find this form at www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-69b.pdf. Download, complete and submit this form to the Tax Commission. You may also contact the Tax Commission directly at (801) 297-2200 or visit their website at www.tax.utah.gov.
  3. Contact the municipality (city and/or county) where the new business site will be located. Click on this link for a list of Utah municipalities and those who perform business registration functions in those municipalities.

 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a real estate investment trust in Utah. For further information on registering a real estate investment trust, contact the following:

  1. Utah Department of Workforce Services Employer Accounts Unit at (801) 526-9400.
  2. Utah State Tax Commission at (801) 297-2200.
  3. Utah Department of Commerce Division of Corporations and Commercial Code:
    • in person at the Heber Wells Building, 160 E 300 S (first floor), Salt Lake City, Utah
    • via mail, Utah Division of Corporations, PO Box 146705, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-6705
    • by fax at (801) 530-6438

    In order to file a Real Estate Investment Trust with the Division of Corporations, a "Declaration of Trust" must be filed. Go to http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE16/TITLE16.htm to find out the statutory requirements for a Declaration of Trust.


 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a business trustA form of business organization created by a trust agreement and filed with the state according to UCA 16-15. or business estate in Utah.     An application for the registration of a Business TrustA form of business organization created by a trust agreement and filed with the state according to UCA 16-15. is also available on-line at www.corporations.utah.gov/pdfforms/bstrust.pdf.


 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a personal service corporation or plan administrators. For more information, please contact:

  1. Department of Workforce Services. Go to their website at www.jobs.utah.gov/ui. Register a personal service corporation as a corporation. Plan administrators, please call the DWS Employer Accounts Unit at (801) 526-9400.
  2. Utah State Tax Commission. Review and complete (if applicable) form TC-69, available at www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-69.pdf and submit to the Tax Commission. For additional questions or information, call the Tax Commission's Technical Research Unit at (801) 297-7705 or visit www.tax.utah.gov.

 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a church or church-controlled organization. For more information, please contact:

  1. Department of Workforce Services. Go to their website at www.jobs.utah.gov/ui/taxform.asp Select and print Form 1N for submission via mail or Fax.
  2. Utah State Tax Commission. Review and complete (if applicable) form TC-69, available at www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-69.pdf and submit to the Tax Commission. Also review and complete (if applicable) Tax Commission Forms TC-160 www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-160.pdf and TC-161  www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-161.pdf. For additional questions or information, call the Tax Commission's Technical Research Unit at (801) 297-7705.

 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a farmer's cooperative. For more information, please contact:

  1. Department of Workforce Services. Go to their website at www.jobs.utah.gov/ui/taxform.asp. Select and print Form 1G for submission via mail or FAX.
  2. Utah State Tax Commission. Call the Tax Commission's Technical Research Unit at (801) 297-7705.

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a government entity. For more information, please contact:

  1. Department of Workforce Services. Go to their website at www.jobs.utah.gov/ui/taxform.asp. Select and print Form 1G for submission via mail or FAX.
  2. Utah State Tax Commission. Review and complete (if applicable) form TC-69 located at www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-69.pdf and submit to the Tax Commission. For additional questions or information, call the Tax Commission's Technical Research Unit at (801) 297-7705.

 

OneStop Business Registration is not currently designed to register a special event. The following sources provide more information on registering a special event.

  1. Department of Workforce Services. If you have employees, all employers should register with Department of Workforce Services Unemployment Insurance Division at www.jobs.utah.gov/ui
  2. Utah State Tax Commission. You may register online at www.tax.utah.gov/sales/specialevents.html, or contact the Utah State Tax Commission directly at (801) 297-6303 or at 1-800-662-4335, ext. 6303.
  3. Contact the municipality (city and/or county) where the special event will be held. Click on this link for a list of Utah municipalities and those who perform business registration functions in those municipalities.

 

OneStop Business Registration currently does not allow registering a business that requires filing of annual employment taxes on Schedule H, Form 1040. To complete this action:

  1. Contact the Utah Department of Workforce Services Unemployment Insurance Division and register as a domestic employer. Their web address is www.jobs.utah.gov/ui.
  2. Contact the Utah State Tax Commission. Download, review and complete (if applicable) the form TC-69, available at: www.tax.utah.gov/forms/current/tc-69.pdf and submit to the Tax Commission. NOTE: Certain types of businesses need special licenses and permits in order to operate that this OneStop service does not issue: for example, insurance agents, contractors, doctors, and dry cleaners, etc. Click here for further instructions.
