Katrina,

When our program reviewed standardized tests, we decided to use the
CASAS because the competencies assessed were more in line with our
instruction than the more academic skills approach of the TABE, and
provides diagnostice information that helps guide instruction. We still

use the TABE in those instances where a collaborating partner "needs" a
very specific grade level score for their purposes, such as a 9.0
reading score to enter a job training program, or for learners who have
a specific academic skills goal. We integrated the CASAS assessments
into our program, because we did not want it to stand alone as a
high-stake test for accountability.

We discovered that the CASAS placement tests placed individuals into
class levels as accurately as our previous in-house assessments, and
does so in less time than previously. So, we moved to using the CASAS
for this purpose. Using it in this way integrates it into our
curriculum and provides one benchmark for learner success.

CASAS or appear to use CASAS more than TABE. Is there a particular
reason for that?

>At the FCCLC, we base our class placements on the CASAS diagnostic

score. Since we only offer two levels of class, the Level one class is
for CASAS ABE levels 1and 2 (Up to a 212 score), Level two class is for
CASAS ABE level 3 and 4 (up to a 235 score) and the fast track class is
for above 235). It would be better to have four levels, but our level
placement is quite flexible.

>In individual classes I like to use the PBS Locator tests, as they are

easier to make specific placement of needs of the class members if the
goal is most commonly, "get my GED".
