Waste Management
Foreseeing the need for environmental management at the Nevada Test Site, the U.S. Department of Energy
National Security Administration Nevada Site Office formally established the Waste Management program in
1978. The program’s primary mission is to manage legacy radioactive waste generated by the U.S.
Department of Energy and defense industry activities. The program is also responsible for the proper
acceptance and disposal of low-level and mixed low-level waste in compliance with applicable federal,
state, and local laws; and for the management of transuranic and hazardous waste. Other program activities
include management of transportation and coordination of rural county emergency response grants.
