Riverside County -Riverside

Riverside was founded in 1870 by John W. North and a group of Easterners who desired to form a new community focused on culture and education. One of the most significant contributors to Riverside’s growth was the establishment of the citrus industry in the 1870s which, by 1882, had half a million citrus trees in California, half of those being in Riverside.

As Riverside prospered businesses continued to grow, including Riverside’s historic Mission Inn. The famous hotel has been a favorite of presidents, royalty and famous movie stars; including the Reagan’s who honeymooned there and the Nixon’s who were married on the grounds. Other famous landmarks include the Municipal Auditorium, Fox Theater, as well as many beautiful homes that provide a link to the city’s past.

Riverside continues to be a center for arts and entertainment. The Riverside Arts Council promotes the cultural life of Riverside as the Riverside Film Festival showcases films from all over the world at the historic Fox Theater. There are many other visual arts groups such as the Riverside Ballet Theater. Along with these great artistic venues, Riverside continues to grow in great centers for entertainment and fantastic restaurants.

The University of California, Riverside, California Baptist University, La Sierra University and Riverside Community College are all quality institutions that demonstrate Riverside’s commitment to foster education in our citizens.

As California continues to grow, Riverside is a destination for many of these new residents as it is a great city of diversity and opportunity.
