  • Describe the main features of the new National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines in the Third Report of the Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III, or ATP III) and the scientific evidence base underlying them.
  • Articulate the ATP III approach to cholesterol lowering for primary and secondary prevention.
  • Apply the guidelines for cholesterol management, including coronary heart disease (CHD) risk assessment and dietary and drug therapies.
  • Identify barriers to implementing the ATP III cholesterol guidelines, such as potential costs and resources, and discuss how practitioners in some settings have overcome them.
  • Discuss how the HEDIS® (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set) measures and clinical systems can be used to translate the new guidelines into multidisciplinary practice settings.
  • Discuss how educational programs for members of the health care team and patients can be used to improve compliance with the guidelines.
  • Evaluate how available tools for cholesterol management can be implemented successfully in your practice.

This program is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer, Inc.
