Student Presentations

The following participants in NIGMS' minority programs made presentations about their research at recent scientific meetings:

• California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH): MARC undergraduates Bernice Aguilar and Jerome Nwachukwu presented their research at the 2002 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in New Orleans, LA, in October.
   
• The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in collaboration with the MORE Division, coordinated the attendance of faculty and seniors in the NIMH Career Opportunities in Research (COR) Education and Training Program at ABRCMS. Over 100 COR scholars attended the meeting. COR trainee Steve Ortiz, a neurobiology major at the University of California, Irvine, received first place in the neurobiological sciences category for his oral presentation, and Gywneth Mogg-Hall, a COR student at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, received first place in the social and behavioral sciences category for her oral presentation.
   
• Florida International University (FIU): MBRS program participants Luciana Amado and Johanna Rodriguez presented their research at the 2002 ABRCMS meeting. Amado received an award for best oral presentation in the biochemical sciences. Leigh N. Crain, Pedro I. Garcia, Jr., Johanna Rodriguez, and Jay Rosenberg presented posters at the American Chemical Society (ACS) annual meeting in New Orleans, LA, in March. Larry Dishaw, Anna Goldina, Betzabel Gonzalez, Liza Merly, Heidi Morales, and Hilda E. Ramon presented posters at the Fifth Comparative Immunology Symposium at FIU in March. Hilda E. Ramon presented at the American Association of Immunologists Meeting in Denver, CO, in May, and Damaris Ramos presented a poster at the 103rd American Society for Microbiology (ASM) meeting in Washington, DC, in May.
   
• San Diego State University (SDSU): MBRS program participant Janet Calderón presented at the 4th International Symposium on Bilingualism in late April in Tempe, AZ, and Veronica Casas presented at the 103rd ASM meeting.
