ABC Members

At ABC we envision a healthier world through herbs - a world where people make educated, responsible choices about herbal medicine as an accepted part of their healthcare and selfcare regimen.  Every day we strive to make our vision a reality through our nonprofit educational programs and services such as HerbalGram, HerbClipTM, internships, and continuing education courses. Since 1988, we have been educating consumers, healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, industry, government and media around the world.

As an independent, nonprofit educational organization, ABC depends on the financial support of people like you to fund our work. You can help make the world a healthier place, naturally, by supporting ABC's educational work.

Whether you are a consumer, herbalist, healthcare professional, educator, writer, researcher, policy maker or are somehow involved in the herbal community, your donation of your time, treasure or talent will support our common goals and help us realize our shared vision of a healthier world through herbs.

Membership and donation revenue account for approximately 75% of ABC's total annual income; most of the remaining 25% comes from advertising revenue and sales of educational materials. For more information, read our 2006 annual report.

Join ABC today and you'll get valuable benefits including instant access to ABC's educational publications through this password-protected website. Or make a tax-deductible donation to ABC or to a specific program.

Please, review ABC’s membership benefits. With so many options available, we’re sure you’ll find one that’s right for you. Together we can help ourselves and others live healthier, naturally.

ABC is registered with the IRS as a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible. Portions of Membership contributions are also tax-deductible. For more details on fair market value of benefits of ABC Membership, contact our Membership department.

Creating an Herbal Legacy Campaign

In March 2007, the American Botanical Council launched a new fundraising initiative designed to help ensure that herbal medicine plays a continuing role in both selfcare and healthcare. The campaign, called Creating an Herbal Legacy, will provide long-term financial support and stability for ABC through three designated funds: the ABC Scholarship Fund, the ABC Green Development & Beautification Fund and the ABC Endowment Fund.

You can help Create an Herbal Legacy by donating to one or more of these funds:

Scholarship Fund

Provides support for healthcare practitioners or students whose financial needs prevent them from participating in ABC’s internship program and annual ethnobotanical tours. ABC offers year-round internships for students in their final year of studies in pharmacy and dietetic disciplines.

Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund was established by the Board of Trustees in 2003 to provide for ABC’s long-term future and financial stability.

Green Development and Beautification Fund

Media Education Program

Through the Media Education Program, ABC responds to inaccuracies and misrepresentations in the media and provides proactive, science-based information about herbal medicine through press releases, articles and media interviews. Members often use our press releases and articles to educate their staff and stakeholders and they disseminate the information through their own channels.

Respect from the media for ABC's independent perspective and reliable information continues to grow. ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal receives, on average, at least one call per week requesting an interview.

Your donations to the Media Education Program will allow ABC to enhance this program by allowing us to pay for national distribution of Press Releases or by helping us fund distribution of the positive coverage on herbs generated by ABC interviews. Potential avenues of distribution include podcasts, video downloads and other technologies that are not currently budgeted at ABC!

HerbClipTM Educational Mailing Service

Twice monthly ABC publishes 14 summaries and critical reviews of important articles drawn from mainstream media, scientific, journals, newsletters, government documents and special reports. The online and print versions are available to ABC Members at certain levels of Membership.

HerbClipTM is peer-reviewed and covers issues such as:

  • Systematic Reviews & Metanalyses of Clinical Trials
  • Ethnobotany
  • Herb Regulation
  • Quality Control
  • Conservation & Sustainability

Your donation to the HerbClip Educational Mailing Service can help us secure copyright permissions from journals that are unwilling to waive the fee so that we can include all original articles with the mailing service. Your donation may also be used to allow ABC to pay our peer-reviewers. Currently, they volunteer their time.

Volunteer Opportunities

We're Growing and Growing and Growing...

The American Botanical Council moved to its new site in 1998, the historic Case Mill Homestead,  6200 Manor Road, Austin, Texas, where we have many demonstration herbal theme gardens.  Volunteers play an integral part in helping the gardens, and thus the organization, continue to flourish and grow.  We can always use help in the gardens and occasionally in other areas.  Here's how YOU can grow with us!

The First Step:
Complete our volunteer application if you are able to volunteer at our Austin, Texas location. After reviewing your application one of our staff members will contact you. Thank you so much for considering making us a part of your life.  Volunteer contributions are greatly appreciated.
