New Homes
Building a new home is a big decision and the resulting environmental
impact can be big, too. Private residences account for more than
20 percent of the energy and about 55 percent of publicly supplied
water consumed in the United States. Approximately 2 million new
homes are built that add to this impact each year. But soon it will
be easy to make the water-efficient choice just by looking for the
WaterSense label when you buy a new home. WaterSense labeled new
homes will be designed to reduce water consumption by setting criteria
for both indoor and outdoor water use and by educating homeowners
about water efficiency. To learn more, see the WaterSense
Labeled New Homes fact sheet.
On August 1, 2008, WaterSense launched a New
Homes Pilot Program.
