Our Post 9/11 Transformation

Change: it’s been a staple at the FBI since its very beginning. Over the decades, we’ve continued to adapt and build new capabilities to deal with wave after wave of emerging threats—the violent gangsters of the ’20s and '30s…the Axis agents of World War II…the mobsters of the 1950s and beyond…the Soviet spies of the Cold War…the financial and corporate hucksters of the rising global economy…and more recently, domestic and international terrorists.

Following the attacks of 9/11, we were called on once again to change. What ensued has been one of the most far-reaching transformations in our history, as we’ve realigned our structure, created new capabilities, hired different talents, and shifted more personnel into intelligence and terrorism operations—all to meet our now overriding priority to protect the U.S. from terrorist attacks.

FBI agents, associates, and analysts.
