Utilities Service . . .
Rural Utilities Service
(RUS), an agency of USDA Rural Development, works to help rural
utilities expand and keep their technology up-to-date, as well
as to establish new and vital services such as distance learning
and telemedicine.
Rural Utilities Service, through Electric, Communications, and
Water and Environmental Programs, issues and guarantees loans
to elegible utilities in order to build and modernize necessary
systems for future development in rural America.
Individuals are not eligible for participation in programs
administered by Rural Utilities Service. |

Programs
Water
and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants
|
Provide
loans and grants for water, sewer, and solid waste facilities
in rural areas and to cities and towns of 10,000 or less.
Eligible applicants
include: Public Bodies, Non-profits, Native American Tribes
This program in
Oklahoma funds approximately 20 projects per year with an
average allocation of about $25 million per year.
Over the past 30
years in Oklahoma this program has served nearly 1 million
rural families and utilized over $600 million.

Distance
Learning/ Telemedicine Grants and Programs

Grants and loans
made under this program encourage, improve, and make affordable
the use of telecommunications, computer networks, and related
technology for rural communities to improve access to educational
and medical services.

In 2001,
Rural Utiities . . .
- Invested
$15,839,610 through loans for water and waste
disposal projects.
- Awarded
$12,336,540 in grants for water and waste disposal
projects.
- 23,154
families benefited from Rural Development's investment
in water projects throughout Oklahoma.
- 84%
of funds were used in targeted areas (Poverty,
EC/CC, Tribes, Outmigration, Undeserved).
- Reduced
delinquency rate to .82%, exceeding the National
goal of 1%.
- Invested
more dollars in rural Oklahoma water projects
than in any other year.

Community Facilities
|
Provides
loans and grants to rural areas and to cities and towns with
a population of 20,000 or less for the development of essential
community facilities and services.
Eligible applicants include: Public Bodies, Non-profits, Native
American Tribes
Purposes may include:
- Roads, streets
and bridges
- Police and fire
protection, jails and equipment
- Health and Safety
Hospitals, clinics, ambulance, etc.
- Multi-Purpose
Buildings, Community Centers, Libraries
Museums, Schools and Cultural Centers
- Other services
that would normally be provided by a public body.
