October 19, 2007: Shared Border Management Initiative

    Summary

The Northern Border Caucus held a discussion on the Shared Border Management Initiative (SBMI) for Members and Congressional Staff. The Shared Border Management Initiative would establish U.S. customs pre-clearance posts at land ports-of-entry within Canadian territory and vice-versa for Canadian posts on U.S. territory. SBMI could help reduce regulation, red tape, and allow the efficiently movement of commerce, trade, and tourism between the United States and Canada. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff withdrew from negotiations with Canada on SBMI in May 2007. Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection officials provided an overview of SBMI and its current status.
