Friends of Anahuac Refuge

In 1996, a group of volunteers at the Anahuac NWR established the Friends of Anahuac Refuge, a non-profit organization committed to preserving and enhancing the refuge through conservation, research and education. The group serves as a liaison between the refuge and the public. The membership represents a diversity of refuge users, including wildlife watchers, hunters, anglers, farmers, ranchers and educators.

Some of the Friends recent accomplishments include:

  • Staffing of the Visitor Information Station and managing the nature store.
  • Designing and funding the Outdoor Education program, which brings more than 1,000 children to the refuge annually.
  • Constructing a 1.5 acre butterfly and hummingbird habitat landscape and trail system.
  • Leading nature tours, including yellow rail walks.
  • Sponsoring of the annual Wild Things! reading program, encouraging fifth grade students at local schools to read more about all things wild!
  • Assisting with special events, including the Anahuac Wildlife Expo, Family Fishing Day, open house tours and other activities.
