Owyhee River System
Boating on the Owyhee River | Map
Description: This spectacular river system flows through Idaho, Nevada and Oregon. The Owyhee is famous for its deep canyons, steep cliffs, turbulent whitewater, brilliant wildflowers and a plethora of wildlife including golden eagles, falcons, hawks, bighorn sheep and deer.
In 1984, Congress recognized this unsurpassed beauty by designating 120 miles of the spectacular Owyhee River located in Oregon as a wild river component of the National Wild and Scenic River System to "protect the free-flowing character of the river, along with its outstanding scenic, recreational, geologic, wildlife and cultural values.” The Idaho portions of the Owyhee River have been found to have the same values and await Congressional action.
Directions: Accessible primarily by whitewater boating. High clearance vehicles can reach some boating access locations; four-wheel drive vehicles are needed for others. Check out the boating guide for detailed access information.
