Founded in 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia, The Home Depot is a home improvement retailer, with over 1,500 stores in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Home Depot stores cater to do-it-yourselfers, as well as home improvement, construction and building maintenance professionals. Each store stocks approximately 40,000 to 50,000 different kinds of building materials, home improvement supplies and lawn and garden products. Newer stores in the U.S. and Canada range from 105,000-115,000 square feet with an additional 15,000-25,000 square foot garden center.
The Home Depot currently operates in 49 U.S. states and in seven Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan. In 1998, Home Depot opened stores in Puerto Rico and as of June 2001, Home Depot purchased four stores in Mexico with three locations in Monterrey and one in Mexico City. It also operates 50 EXPO Design Centers across the United States. The company offers facilities maintenance and repair products, and wallpaper and custom window treatments via direct mail through subsidiaries Maintenance Warehouse and National Blinds and Wallpaper, Inc.
