The Year of Water
The global water crisis was the focus of special Saturday Science Sessions in Washington, D.C. on November 22 during the 2008 Sigma Xi Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference. A morning panel discussion featured Peter H. Gleick, president of the Pacific Institute; Andras Szollosi-Nagy, director of UNESCO's Division of Water Sciences; Peter Thum, founder of Ethos Water; and Thomas G. Mattia, senior vice president of the Coca Cola Company.

Sigma Xi Celebrates Year of Science 2009
"How are you celebrating?" That's the slogan for the Year of Science 2009, a year-long celebration of science and its role in society. Sigma Xi has joined a coalition of scientific organizations and academic institutions in a grassroots effort to engage the American public in science.
Sigma Xi Visiting Scholar Completes S&T Report
The goal of a Sigma Xi-National Science Foundation workshop was to help identify the contributions international collaborations make in promoting excellence in scientific and engineering research and to use that information to develop monitoring and evaluation criteria for NSF programs.
Joseph Whittaker Elected President of Sigma Xi
Joseph A. Whittaker, a neurophysiologist at Morgan State University, was elected the 73rd president of Sigma Xi at the Society’s 2008 Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference in Washington, D.C. He will serve as president-elect beginning July 1, 2009.
Awards Presented at 2008 Student Research Conference
From more than 230 posters presented at the conference, Sigma Xi recognized 34 "superior" student poster presenters with both medals and cash awards. The Society also awarded certificates and cash prizes to the top three finalists of its inaugural Student Short Film Competition.
2008 Sigma Xi Year of Water White Papers
Sigma Xi’s Critical Issues in Science series has focused in 2008 on the global water crisis. White papers were solicited on related topics. In them, experts endeavored to persuade to a point of view, outlining a problem and prospective solutions. We’ve posted them online to stimulate further discussion.
Pete Conrad Spirit Award Opportunity
The Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards, that challenge high school students to design products using science and technology, are offering two new resources for its competitors. One resource is a series of live chats with experts, beginning on November 6 with Anousheh Ansari.
Sigma Xi and UTEK Announce Alliance
Sigma Xi and UTEK Corporation have entered into an alliance to bring together UTEK's TekScout service and Sigma Xi's membership. TekScout is an online open innovation network that brings together independent scientists and engineers from around the world to solve R&D challenges.
