Catalog of Fishes
The California Academy of Sciences provides this updated January 2004 online version of the print catalog (published in April 1998). Included are all species, genera, and references, along with the classification, introduction, and list of museum abreviations. Excluded are the interpretation of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Appendix A), and the species and genera in a classification (which can be simulated with appropriate searches), and Appendix B.
Census of Marine Life
A "growing global network of researchers in more than 45 nations engaged in a ten-year initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the oceans -- past, present, and future." The site presents descriptions of and links to the network's projects, such as "Natural Geography in Shore Areas" and the "History of Marine Animal Populations." Available in several languages, including French, English, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Coral Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program
CRAMP is a research program designed to identify the controlling factors, both natural and anthropogenic, contributing to the stability, decline, or recovery of Hawaiian reefs. The searchable bibliography is subdivided by island.
Coral Reef Information System: Discover NOAA's Data
Designed as a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products, with Discover NOAA's Data users can access information by a text search of metadata records (title, author, keyword, etc) or by a spatial search using an Arc IMS application. The map program includes "over 19,000 aerial photos, 400 preview navigational charts, tide stations, paleoclimatological studies, photo mosaics, coral reef monitoring, bleaching reports, and more" plus numerous help features for both search methods.
Digital Fish Library
Scripps Institution of Oceanography is using magnetic resonance imaging to scan specimens of the 482 fish families known to science. This technology will allow a look inside specimens that otherwise could not be dissected. The initial goal is to scan 1000 specimens and post the 3-D images on the Web. The site is currently a preliminary model.
DUCKDATA
A comprehensive bibliographic database for waterfowl. The database is located at the U.S. Geologic Survey office in Vicksburg, MS and carefully maintained with verified citations.
Echinoid Directory
The Natural History Museum of London (UK) provides this website on sea urchins "to provide a taxonomic resource for the scientific community in which the genera and higher taxa of echinoid can be simply and rapidly identified. It includes color images, important distinguishing characteristics, background information for beginners and an Index to taxa.
Effects of Temperature on Invertebrates and Fish: A Selected Bibliography
Compiled by Drs. Victor Kennedy and Joseph Mihursky of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, this bibliography covers the effects of temperature on invertebrates and fish. Complete to 1993, it is searchable by keyword or subject and contains nearly 3,500 references on aquatic invertebrates and fish, in cold as well as warm temperatures.

FAO: AGRIS and CARIS Information Systems
AGRIS is the international information system for the agricultural sciences and technology. The system identifies worldwide literature (both conventional and non-conventional; the so-called "grey" literature), dealing with all aspects of agriculture.
CARIS is the Current Agricultural Research Information System, which identifies projects dealing with information on agriculture. The basic unit in CARIS is a set of data describing all the components of each single project.
Fishbase
A global information system on fishes developmed at the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and many other partners, and with support from the European Commission (EC).
Fish Collection Database (LACM)
Provided by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County- Department of Ichthyology - with four ways to search this collection -- by map, specific location field search, all location field search, and taxon field search. The collection emphasizes the Pacific Rim, particularly fishses of the Galapagos Islands, Hawaiian islands, Philippine Islands, the Antarctic, and the freshwaters of North, Central and South America.
FISHSTAT Plus
Provides users with access to Fishery Statistics of various sorts. Any data having time series structure can potentially be stored and processed by Fishstat Plus. The system consists of the main module and the datasets which can be installed and uninstalled separately. Newest datasets include capture production, aquaculture production, and total production dating back to 1950. Available datasets are listed along with download instructions for universal software for fishery statistical time series.
Freshwater and Marine Image Bank
As part of the University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections, more than 2600 images from 18th and 19th century publications can be searched or browsed. Each image includes a description and bibliographic citation.
Hexacorallians of the World
This database includes an electronic catalog of species (of Actiniaria, Antipatharia, Ceriantharia, Corallimorpharia, Ptychodactiaria, Scleractinia, and Zoanthidea), a bibliography of literature in which those species were described, an inventory of type specimens for more than 1,300 species of Sea Anemones, and distribution maps and images for most type specimens. The site is searchable by Genus, Species, Museum, Author, Year, or Distribution.

Marine Geoscience Data Management System (mgDMS) Data Link
Provided by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, visitors can locate data in marine, continental, and polar environments across numerous data types and disciplines. Searching by dates, data types, regions, or missions specifics, researchers can access metadata summaries including the investigators, dates of records, locations, and data types available. Records provide links to more in-depth information about the research platform and the operator. The global bathymetry database allows users to observe maps and download grids.

National Image Library
A unique collection of photographs from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dedicated solely to fish and wildlife, wildlands, and wildlife conservation efforts. The images are copyright-free and downloadable in high and low resolutions. The site is searchable by subject, location, photographer, and results appear as low-res thumbnails linked to higher res files suitable for high quality printing in nominal sizes.
National Sea Grant Library
The University of Rhode Island (URI) Coastal Data and Information Center (CDIC) and the National Sea Grant Library (NSGL) are pleased to make several digital libraries available from this site. The documents in these libraries have all resulted from Sea Grant research and the responsible Sea Grant program can be identified by the institution code in the document number.
NMITA, Neogene Marine Biota of Tropical America
Hosted by the Department of Geoscience, University of Iowa, and funded by the National Science Foundation, NMITA is an online biotic database "containing images and data for taxa used in analyses of Tropical American biodiversity over the past 25 million years." The Website offers Taxonomic Lists (with links to images and data for individual taxa), Morphologic Characters (currently for Zooxanthellate Corals and Elasmobranchs and Teleosteans), Identification Keys (currently for Zooxanthellate Corals), Occurrences in the Dominican Republic, and Instructional Aids. Images and data are provided for the following individual taxa: Bivalves, Gastropods, Bryozoans, Azooxanthellate Corals, Zooxanthellate Corals, Benthic Forams, Ostracodes, and Elasmobranchs and Teleosteans. Although Panama data will eventually be included, the site currently highlights data from the Dominican Republic.
Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Database
Provided by the US Geological Survey, this database includes species information and distribution maps for a variety of aquatic vertebrate, invertebrate, and plant species. Searchable by species name, state, or drainage basin.
Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Pesticide Database
To find out the vital statistics about a particular pesticide, you might talk to a farmer about the pests it is used for; a chemist about its breakdown products; a pesticide activist or government organization about regulatory status; and a physician about toxicity. Or you could search the largest, most comprehensive collection of pesticide data in the world, including information about 5,100 pesticide active ingredients, pesticide breakdown products and related chemicals. The system also provides information on over 100,000 formulated pesticide products registered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
ReefBase
ReefBase aims to provide access to data and information on coral reefs and associated shallow tropical habitats. The database offers information on nearly 10,000 coral reefs and protected areas and is searchable by country/region as well as globally. It also includes a growing collection of images and maps.
Sea Turtle Online Bibliography
Developed by the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research (ACCSTR) at the University of Florida, this bibliography includes over 12,000 references on all aspects of sea turtle biology, conservation and management. Searches include Keyword(s), Author Name, and/or Title. The bibliography also links to information about other ACCSTR research activities and to CTURTLE, a sea turtle biology and conservation Listserv discussion network with over 750 subscribers from more than 25 countries.

USGS Water Quality Data Warehouse
The U.S. Geological Survey announces a new online data warehouse of 6.5 million records that enables water resource managers, scientists, and the public to find data about the quality of the water at 2,800 stream sites and 5,000 wells in 46 states. The data were collected by the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program beginning in 1991 in 36 basins around the country, which are the basic study units of the NAWQA effort. The data warehouse has been in use by USGS researchers since November 1999. Data from 15 additional study units, which began in 1997, will be incorporated later. Data in the warehouse are from surface and ground water sources, not from finished tap water.
U.S. National Herbarium: Algal Collection
Part of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, this collection includes estuarine, marine, freshwater, airborne, and terrestrial algae with over 231,398 accessioned and inventoried herbarium specimens preserved on herbarium sheets.

WebWAVES, Canadian Database
The Council of Fisheries and Oceans Libraries (COFOL), Fisheries and Oceans Canada announces the availability of WebWAVES, Internet access to the WAVES database. WAVES is the union catalogue of the libraries of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. It contains references to published and unpublished literature on fisheries, aquatic sciences, and nautical sciences with emphasis on Canadian works and items relevant to Canadian interests.
