Oldest Military Veterans Get Ready for Annual Golden
Age Games
Largest veterans’ competition in the world opens
August 20 for those 55 and older
July
15, 2008 – An Olympic-type event of its own, more than 700 “golden age”
military veterans from 42 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have
registered to compete in the largest sports and recreational competition
for senior veterans in the world August 20-24. The oldest veteran
competing in the Games this year is 97 years young.

Seniors, Super-Seniors win four championships in
Turkey

November 28, 2006 - The area of Antalya Turkey was
the site of the 2006 ITF Super-Senior World Team Championships held the
week of October 23rd. The event was played on slow red clay and split
between two wonderful sites-the Ali Bey Club in Belek and the Ali Bey
Club in Manavgat.

MRI Helps Identify Older Athletes at Risk for Heart
Attack
Identifies cardiovascular disease not yet causing
symptoms
November 27, 2006 - A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
study of healthy marathon runners over age 50 showed that cardiovascular
disease occurs among seemingly healthy endurance athletes and may be
difficult to distinguish from the effects of training the heart muscle.
The findings were presented today at the annual meeting of the
Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

across the nation - aged 55 and older - will test their mettle in
competition at the nation’s largest sporting event for senior military
veterans. The 20th National Veterans Golden Age Games, a national sports
and recreational competition, will take place May 7-12, 2006 in Hampton,

March 21, 2006 – Shooting your age in golf is
considered one of the most difficult feats to accomplish in the game.
It's only been done by a few and clearly older golfers have a better
chance. Even Tiger Woods may have to wait until he is a senior citizen
to accomplish this feat. But, seniors and others across the nation will
have the opportunity to shoot par golf -- their age -- and qualify to
play in a field of 80 golfers including Arnold Palmer and Gary Player on
national television.

athletes take center stage in the winter issue of GeezerJock, which
names Bill Collins, a 54-year-old sprinter from Houston, as the winner
of the first Michelob ULTRA GeezerJock of the Year Award. They also name
male and female winners in five age groups ranging from age 40 to 80

Huntsman World Senior Games Draw Over
9,000 Athletes
Oct. 13, 2005 - The Huntsman World Senior Games -
open to all athletes ages 50 and above – opened their annual competition
on October 3 and they conclude on October 15 in St. George, Utah. More
than 9,000 senior athletes were expected to compete in the 22 sports
offered at this 19th annual event. All 50 states and several foreign
countries are represented.

Games
continue through Friday for 500 disabled veterans
June 30, 2005 - Curtis Hobbs never thought he was
good enough to participate in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. A
Boston resident and member of the New England Chapter of the Paralyzed
Veterans of America since 1967, Hobbs remembers hearing about the Games
in the early 1980s but chose not to participate. “I didn’t do any sports
when I was younger, so I didn’t think I could compete,” Hobbs recalls.

Senior Olympics Underway; Marred By Athletes Death
June
15, 2005 – The 2005 Senior Olympics are well underway in Pittsburg but
the event has been marred by the death of bicyclist Paul V. Haase Jr.,
77, of Waverly, Tenn. The coroner ruled he died from a broken neck that
occurred while he was warming up. Haase was the eighth person to die
since the games began in 1987.

World’s Oldest Marathoner, 94, Leads Team of Seniors
in Scotland

Singh anchored five-man team with combined age of 397
June 13, 2005 – Fauja Singh, a 94-year-young
grandfather of 13, led a marathon relay team yesterday in the Edinburgh
Marathon in Scotland, which was billed as the “oldest ever marathon
relay team.” The five-man team named itself “Sikhs in the City” and had
a combined age of 397 years.

Feb.
2, 2005 – With only four months to go, the Summer National Senior Games
(Senior Olympics) is set to go in Pittsburgh on June 3, after the
community raised close to $2.5 million to fund the event. More than
12,000 senior athletes (50 and older), representing their states, are
expected to compete in 18 sporting events.

Almost 8,000 Senior Athletes Competed in Huntsman
World Senior Games
Nov.
2, 2004 – Nearly 8,000 athletes 50 and older competed in 92 events at the
Huntsman World Senior Games held October 4-16 at St. George, Utah. The World
Senior Games were founded by John H. Morgan, Jr. in 1987 and are held each
year in in mid-October with the City of St. George hosting the Games. In
1989 Jon M. Huntsman, Chairman of the Huntsman Corporation, a chemical
manufacturer, became the Games' principal sponsor.

Tournament to Add to Legacy
Sept. 27, 2004 – Dodo Cheney, 88 years young, won
the championship match of the women’s 85 and over bracket at the 24th
International Tennis Federation World Seniors Tennis Championships. It
was just another notch on the racket for the senior star that was
greeted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July.

Bill Anderson, 78, Starts Quest to Bicycle Across
Nation Both Directions
Sept. 15, 2004 – W.J. “Bill” Anderson, 78 years
young, will jump on his bicycle and leave San Diego, California, on
September 25 and head for Jacksonville Beach, Florida. His goal is to
become the oldest person to ride a bike across the U.S. from north to south and west to east - and to
raise money for Crossroads Mission in his hometown, Yuma, Arizona. He
may actually be the only one to ever accomplish this fete at any age.

30, 2004 - George Brunstad, who is the uncle of movie star Matt Damon,
became the oldest person to swim the English Channel and raised at least
$11,000 for an orphanage in Haiti at the same time. He completed the
fete on Sunday after celebrating his 70th birthday on

Older Marathon Runners Show Greater Improvement Than
Younger Ones
Women lead the way in proving senior citizens have greater potential
Aug. 25, 2004 - Marathon runners 50 and older, and
female athletes in particular, are showing greater improvement in
running times than younger runners and appear to have greater
performance limits than expected, according to a new study that looked
at runners in the New York City Marathon over 17 years.

91-Year-Young Woman Wins National Water Ski Title
Aug. 9, 2004 –
Lucille Borgen of Babson Park, Florida, amazed the crowd at the 62
Annual Water Ski National Championships by winning the Women 10 slalom and tricks event on her 91st birthday. She is the oldest
competitor to ever ski at the Nationals.

Tennis Kids Raise Money for Elderly in Houston
July 29, 2004 - On July 15, students from the Zina
Garrison All Court Tennis Academy held a tennis tournament to benefit
Houston's elderly. The project was conceived by the students over a
four-week period as their summer community service project. The main
objective was to raise money to assist the elderly in paying their
energy bills during the hot Houston summer.

Indiana Woman, Florida Man Win First Gold in 2003 Senior Olympics
May 28, 2003 - Two gold medals
were awarded in the first two days of competition in the 2003 Senior
Olympics being held in Hampton Roads, Virginia, but winners are
expected to be determined today in some age brackets of archery,

Veterans Prepare
for National Games in L.A.
May 22, 02 - More than 450 "golden age" veterans are
expected in Los Angeles, August 10-17, 2002, to participate in national
athletic competitions co-sponsored by the
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
The 16th National Veterans
Golden Age Games are open to all U.S. military veterans 55 or older, who are
currently receiving care at a VA medical facility. The local sponsors of the
games are the
Desert Pacific Healthcare Network
and hosted by the
VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
The games will include sports activities such as golf, swimming, bicycling,
horseshoes, bowling, croquet, table tennis, checkers, dominoes and a
pentathlon (softball hit, discus, shot put, basketball and air rifles). This
year the exhibition events are lawn bowling, tennis and chess.
