Welcome to the Web site we have established to inform you about our investigation of the Bradford Island Historic Landfill at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River 40 miles east of Portland, Oregon.
National attention was drawn in 2001 to a site that dates back nearly 60 years, when landfills were standard in cities and small towns alike, used by industry and construction, and on farms of all sizes.
Times have changed. What was standard practice many years ago when chemicals and household garbage were so casually discarded is now recognized as a danger to human health and the environment. Past “sins,” whether or not they were considered “sins” at the time, need to be rectified. That is what is happening at the Bradford Island Historic Landfill.
This Web site will help you learn more about the landfill – what has occurred, what is happening now, and potential next steps. Information here will give you an idea of the problems and concerns, and help put the issue into perspective.
The Corps is working closely with state and federal agencies to take the right next steps as we perform the work at Bradford Island and in the river.
