Established more than 30 years ago, UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program is a clinical branch of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. The program was created with support from the California Legislature and the Veterans Administration to address the severe shortage of physicians practicing in California’s San Joaquin Valley and to increase access to continuing medical education in the region.
The program has grown in size and scope over the years. Today, UCSF Fresno plays a vital role in answering local healthcare needs ranging from training medical professionals to providing clinical care for patients to conducting research pertinent to the Valley’s diverse and growing population to creating a pipeline of students academically prepared to pursue careers in health and medicine.
On an annual basis, UCSF Fresno trains more than 200 medical residents in seven specialties and trains a number of fellows in seven sub-specialties. Nearly 200 medical students also receive training at UCSF Fresno throughout the year.
Growing Valley doctors is at the heart of UCSF Fresno. Since its inception, the program has graduated more than 2,000 resident physicians. More than one-third of physicians trained here stay in the area to care for community members.
