Dear Colleagues: The International GEWEX Project Office would like to bring to your attention the AGU Chapman Conference on Atmospheric Water Vapor and Its Role in Climate to be held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, USA on 20–24 October 2008. The main objective of the conference is to bring together a diverse group to discuss recent advances in the understanding of processes related to, and new methods for observing, atmospheric water vapor. This constituent has attracted strong interest since the early 1970s for a number of reasons. First, water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas and is anticipated to provide the single largest feedback on climate change. It also plays a decisive role in controlling the development of atmospheric convection and cloud cover. Clouds exert additional feedbacks on climate, though of unknown strength, and polar stratospheric clouds enable ozone destruction through heterogeneous reactions involving chlorine compounds. Finally, water vapor is the source of the important hydroxyl radical which is responsible for removing many atmospheric pollutants. The Abstract Submission Deadline is 11 July 2008. http://www.agu.org/meetings/chapman/2008/ecall/ If you have questions or would like to be placed on a mailing list (be sure to include the name of the meeting you are interested in), e-mail chapman-help@agu.org or call the AGU Meetings Department at +1-202-777-7329. I apologize for any cross-posting. Kind regards, Peter van Oevelen Director, IGPO

ARM AVP Workshop on Advances in Airborne Instrumentation for Measuring Aerosols, Clouds, Radiation and Atmospheric State Parameters University of Illinois, Urbana, IL, 14-16 October 2008 POC: Greg McFarquhar at mcfarq@atmos.uiuc.edu if cost would preclude participation. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hampton Inn, 1200 W. University Avenue, Urbana, IL 61801 (217)337-1100 at a rate of $89/night under the name “Department of Atmospheric Sciences.” The block of rooms will be held only until 11 September 2008. Please make reservations as early as possible as hotels often become fully booked during the school year. The meeting will be held at the Levis Faculty Center, 919 West Illinois Street, Urbana, IL 61801, which is within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the Hampton Inn.
