2008 Data Search and Capture Efforts for AWE Cases

Listed below are the data search and capture efforts for AWE sites that occurred during 2008. When available, we have included the sites for which information was recovered. The most recent efforts are at the top of the list:

  • Kansas City Federal Records Center
    Lee's Summit, MO
    October 2008

    Documents relating to external exposure of the sites below were retrieved. The information was the result of dosimetry services provided to many sites for a period of time by the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Twenty-eight boxes of information were reviewed and 107 documents were retrieved.

    This effort recovered information on the following AWE sites:

    Three boxes of information were reviewed and several documents were retrieved for the Nuclear Metals, Inc. facility. Area, environmental, personal monitoring, and bioassay program procedures were retrieved.

    Several cabinet drawers of information were reviewed and 107 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: air sampling data from 1956 - 1960, radiation surveys, a history of the site through 1966, and a roster of employees with various diseases for the Dow Chemical Co. (Madison) facility; interim and final decontamination reports from the immediate post war period and a brief summary of exposure data for the Metallurgical Laboratory.

    Fifty-nine boxes of information were reviewed and 61 documents were retrieved for the General Electric Company (Ohio) such as: in-plant air samples, personnel exposure data, high bay stack counting data, and visitor radiation exposure information.

    September 2008

    The following information was retrieved during this data capture effort: leaching of radionuclides, radioactive soil beneath parking garage ramp, air and environmental results, history of St. Louis Uranium Processing plant radioactive waste sites, radium pits removal action work plan, and pre-design investigation summary reports for the St. Louis Airport Storage Site (SLAPS) facility; rod straightening test and air dust samples for the Medart Co.; historical storage of radioactive materials, personnel interviews, and historical storage of radiation materials for the Tyson Valley Powder Farm; and lost or forgotten sites information and transmittal of interim groundwater monitoring plan for the United Nuclear Corp. Thirty linear feet of shelves and 59 boxes of information were reviewed and 136 documents were retrieved.

    During this data capture trip, 180 documents were reviewed and 21 documents were retrieved for the Linde Ceramics Plant. Documentation related to cleanup verification and a public meeting report of the proposed plan for Building 14 was retrieved.

    Ninety-three boxes of information were reviewed and 146 documents were retrieved such as: bioassay results, gamma exposure rate surveys, controlled area access log for Associated Aircraft Tool and Manufacturing Co.; results of a preliminary radiological survey, guidelines for uranium residual radioactive material in soil, and certification docket for remedial action performed for B&T Metals; bioassay results and radiation surveys for Buildings 513-519 of Baker & Co.; environmental samples for Colonie Site; quarterly reports of analysis and environmental samples for Maywood Chemical Works; environmental samples and results for Saint Louis Airport Storage (SLAPS); weekly reports, contracts, news articles, radiological data, characterization report, and monthly accountability report for Ventron Corp.

    During this data capture effort, 102 boxes of information were reviewed and 146 documents were retrieved. Uranium guidelines, radiological survey results, and characterization results were retrieved for the Baker Brothers facility; site plan, low level waste storage disposal records, gamma-ray exposure rate surveys, and reports of analysis were retrieved for the Albany Research Center; and sampling data and an activity safety envelope for remedial action were retrieved for the Associated Aircraft Tool and Manufacturing Co.

    Twenty-three boxes of information were reviewed and 303 documents were retrieved during this data capture trip such as: shipments of billets to sites from the B&T Metals & Revere Copper and Brass facilities; progress reports from 1943 and 1945, badge results, air sampling results, and radium body burdens for the Linde Ceramics Plant; discussions of pitchblende as a source for polonium as well as uranium and radium, March and October 1944 film badge results, and a 1942 summary of experimental work with uranium for the Vitro Manufacturing (Canonsburg) facility.

    Thirty-six boxes of information were reviewed and 176 documents were retrieved. The following information was retrieved: reports on transactions between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Vitro Manufacturing (Canonsburg) facilities; correspondence regarding material transfers and a sampling of Atomic Nuclear Propulsion logbooks dating from 1955 from the General Electric (Ohio) facility; a roster of employees that identifies actual time spent on Manhattan Engineering District and Atomic Energy Commission work, inventories of uranium scrap to be burned, and a brief history of the types of ore handled at the Vitro Manufacturing (Canonsburg) facility; plant processes and problems, radiological survey data, and internal and external dosimetry data for the Harshaw Chemical Co. facility.

(Bayside); and trip reports for Simonds Saw & Steel. Fifteen boxes of information were reviewed and 89 documents were retrieved.

    Thirty-one boxes were reviewed and 356 documents were retrieved. Mound Plant Ac-227 bioassay data, neutron dosimetry tests, lists of authorized entrants for the R Building Corridor 5 Project, analysis of liquid scintillation count of plutonium, paired neutron-photon whole body, extremity dosimetry results, plutonium body burden data, polonium kidney and spleen lifetime doses, and incident reports were retrieved.
