Catalog of Beneficials -- Fly Control |
Overview: Search And Destroy Control For Flies
Start regular releases of parasitic wasps when flies appear in the spring so colonies can reproduce and build up on the first generations of flies. Regular fly parasite releases during warm months combined with optional trapping of adult flies and minimizing fly breeding habitat constitute an effective, economical fly control program. Good early fly control is easier than attacking a population that has gotten out of control. Prolific and adaptable Muscidifurax raptorellus and aggressive Muscidifurax zaraptor are mixed with hardy Spalangia cameroni. Durable release stations are available to protect fly parasites.
For informational Bulletins on the insects in a biocontrol program see Bulletins.
The prices below are for one-time only purchase, or schedules of 4 shipments, 8 shipments and 16 shipments during fly season. We work with you to set up a program and modify it on the 'fly' to adjust for more or fewer flies Call 800-248-BUGS to set up a fly control program.

Fly Parasite Release Stations
Polypropylene plastic mesh cylinder to safely hold fly parasites for release, can be hung with bail, strapped onto a pipe or hung on a screw, hang 3-5 ft above ground. Place small handful of FP in each container each shipment. When full, empty and start over. Place cylinders around fly breeding sites, near where fly maggots are found, every 100 ft or so, 5-10/acre.Station protects FP from predators, birds, being trampled under foot, so your fly parasites – FP may continue to emerge over 3 week period. |

FLY PARASITE SCHEDULES |
Arrange for shipments to arrive every 1, 2, 3 or more weeks through the fly season. Choose between two levels of price savingsshorter schedules of at least 4 shipment dates and longer schedules of at least 16 shipment dates with more discount. Feel free to increase or decrease the number of bags and make adjustments in shipping dates as needed |
Estimating Numbers of Fly Parasites to Order
A standard FP10 unit contains a minimum of 10,000 fly pupae from which 20,000 adult parasites will emerge. Factors affecting recommended numbers of parasites: numbers of flies, amount and wetness of manure or other organic matter for fly breeding, temperature, humidity, naturally-occurring beneficial controls, incoming migrations and use of bait traps. Starting guidelines are based on 500 to 1,000 parasites per large animal per month depending on concentration or amount of manure. Use two parasites per small animal per month. Double up when fly problems are severe and cut back when the parasites are well-established and the weather is cooler and drier. |
At North Carolina Zoological Park, most animal manure is composted. George uses fly parasites to find flies breeding around pile edges and hard to clean places. |

ODOR MANAGEMENT |
Odor is the way many insects locate food and sites to lay eggs. If you control odor from decomposing organic matter you can decrease flies attracted to scatole from fermenting manure and alcohols from fermenting sugars. Also, consider animal health and worker comfort in areas with strong odors. Odor can be a sign that a biological process has gone wrong and can benefit from some managerial attention. |
There are several ways to decrease odor:
- Change conditions (i.e. drying) to stop decomposition.Shift decomposition process, such as with acid, inoculants, or composting, away from anaerobic microbes that live without oxygen and produce bad odors to aerobic microbes that need oxygen and give off pleasant odors.
- Intercept and neutralize odors in the air (see Bioworld Odor Neutralizer below).
