About the Friends

In 1994, a group of people in the Kansas City area interested in promoting science and technology in the community and in supporting the Linda Hall Library came together to form the Friends of the Linda Hall Library. The first official meeting of the Friends of the Linda Hall Library was held on December 2, 1994. The Friends actively support the mission of the library and the mission of the Friends.

The Friends are governed by an executive committee consisting of ten Friends. Four members of the library's staff serve as advisors.

Mission

The Friends of the Linda Hall Library shall encourage and organize support for the Library and its related mission, to enrich the intellectual and cultural climate of the region by promoting study, appreciation and interest in science, engineering, and technology.

By their efforts, the Friends of the Linda Hall Library pursue their mission through several initiatives, including but not limited to, the following:

• Sponsor illuminating lectures, exhibitions, and other special activities for the library


• Enhance community awareness of the library as a vital resource for science, engineering, and technology


• Encourage membership in the Friends and financial support for the library through the Annual Giving Fund of the Linda Hall Library

Programs

The Linda Hall Lecture Series, which has been running since 1997, consists of six lectures on contemporary and historical topics in science, engineering and technology for a general audience.

• The Linda Hall Library Hedgehog published specifically for our Friends that includes information about our collections, announcements of future lectures, and regular features from staff


• LHL Volumes, a monthly e-mail update about activities at the Library


• A copy of the Library’s annual report
