Seniors visiting Mount Shasta Country will find an array of activities, from leisurely walks, to bird watching, to fishing with the grandkids. You'll find natural beauty in our lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and wildlife refuges...and comfortable lodging in our small country communities.

Siskiyou County enjoys four distinct seasons and each region of the county offers a variety of indoor and outdoor adventures. Summer months are filled with lake swimming, float trips on the river and camping at high mountain lakes to get out of the heat. Indoor adventures include touring our local history museums, art galleries, and shops. Springtime presents an interesting cross over season, as winter activities come to an end and warmer weather approaches, inspiring the new growth of spring. The countryside becomes a canvas of lovely colors in the fall as trees trade in the green of summer for reds, golds and oranges. Seniors traveling with their grandchildren will find plenty of activities to enjoy with the youngsters.
relax
Rivers and streams offer a wonderful setting for relaxing in the cool shade.

The seasons are full of adventure and relaxation. In warmer weather, visitors and locals take to the lakes, streams and rivers of Siskiyou County. Bring a boat, pack a picnic and bring your beach chair to lowland lakes like Lake Siskiyou and Copco Lake. Or head up to one of the many alpine lakes that boast clear, cool, crisp water. Rub shoulders with local folks at home town festivals and learn about the varied history of this area as it grew from native peoples, to early settlers and gold miners, loggers, farmers, ranchers and railroad men. Leisure activities in the great indoors are also available, but often the cool water of an alpine lake, or lazy afternoons sitting beneath a tree as the breeze rustles the leaves, offer pleasant rewards that, perhaps suprisingly, will keep you outdoors.

  Leisure for Seniors

train Take a ride on a country railroad The McCloud River Railroad offers delightful open-air Excursion Train rides through the forested southern slopes of Mt. Shasta. Taking a little over an hour, the excursions operate weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, departing from the historic town of McCloud. The trips feature either diesel locomotives or one of our historic steam locomotives, the 1925 Alco built No. 25 or the 1914 Baldwin built No. 18.

Enjoy a day on the greens golfing with a backdrop of stunning scenery at any of our 7 golf courses. Choose from championship 18-hole courses, peaceful 9-hole community courses, or a Scottish Links course. The Mount Shasta Resort and Lake Shastina Golf Resort offer championship courses along with views of Mount Shasta. Community courses dot Siskiyou County, with Eagle's Nest Golf Course hugging the shores of the Klamath River in the north county and Indian Camp Golf Course skirting the edges of the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. For more on Mount Shasta Country golfing, see our golfing page.

Go bird watching at the Tule Lake and Klamath National Wildlife Refuges in eastern Siskiyou County. You'll enjoy a variety of birds regardless when you visit. In summertime, the early morning and evening hours will bring the richest activity. The Refuge Visitors' Center provides information on which species are currently in the refuge and a self-guided driving tour of the refuges will give you a chance to spot the common and not-so-common visitors. Klamath Refuges in eastern Siskiyou County are home to the largest concentration of Bald Eagle in the lower 48 states. The Klamath River corridor is also home to a variety of birds and wildlife which can be viewed from the shore on Forest Service interpretive trails or from the water on a rafting trip. For more information on birding see our birding page.

ballooning Take flight in a hot air balloon over the Shasta Valley where Mount Shasta is a constant backdrop. The balloon gently sails above the meadows and fields and slowly settles to the ground, flushing wildlife from the marshes and shallows of the Shasta River. Ballooning is also popular in the Butte and Scott Valleys. Commercial pilots offer trips and ballooning enthusiasts should plan to visit during September for the Montague Rotary Balloon Faire, which draws pilots from all over the Pacific Northwest.

Stroll through county museums to learn of the varied history of Siskiyou County towns. The Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka has both indoor and outdoor displays that share the history of gold miners, Native Americans, pioneers and mountain men and the Chinese community in the area. The new museum at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds in Tulelake offers a audio-guided tour through the region's rich history, including the story of Captian Jack, German and Italian POWs, the Japanese Internment Camp and recent water issues in the Klamath Basin. To learn more about museums spread throughout Mount Shasta Country, request a visitors' guide by emailing us with your name and postal address.

  Active Recreation
fishing Visit an alpine lake for a day of hiking, fishing and swimming. Siskiyou County has scores of lakes in mountain settings. From Mt. Shasta, Castle Lake is easily accessible by paved road with camping areas, lots of hiking opportunties and great swimming. From W.A. Barr Road, just past the Box Canyon Dam near Lake Siskiyou, take a left turn and follow the road all the way to the end to find Castle Lake. This alpine lake is cool in early summer so make sure to visit on a warm day.
For more information about alpine lakes throughout the area, contact the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station at 530-926-4511 or stop by at 204 W. Alma Street in Mt. Shasta.

The Upper McCloud River Area boasts three waterfalls of varying height. The easily accessible Lower Falls has a Forest Service maintained parking area near Fowlers Camp with access to the pool at the base of the waterfall for viewing and fishing. The overlook area offers a handicap accessible view of the Lower Falls. A trail from Fowlers Camp will take visitors up river to Middle Falls and Upper Falls. The hike to Middle Falls is approximately one mile with an additional half mile walk to Upper Falls.
Find great information for the Lower McCloud, Upper McCloud, Upper Sacramento on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest web site.

hiking Go caving in the miles of volcanic lava tubes at the Lava Beds National Monument. The Monument has at least 20 caves open for exploring at any time. See cinder cones, shield volcanoes, spatter cones and other volcanic features while at the Monument. Stop by the visitor center for information, loaner lights and bump hats. Call ahead to find out about ranger led activities during the summer months. While you're in the Tulelake area stop by historical points of interest at Captain Jack's Stronghold and Petroglyph Point. The Stronghold is the site where Modoc Indians held out against U.S. troops in the rugged volcanic country. Petroglyph Point has carvings made by early people when this cinder cone was surrounded by a lake.

Cast a line for rainbow, brook and brown trout in any of our 180 high elevation and wilderness lakes. Most of the 89 lakes in the Marble Mountains Wilderness Area are stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout.
Or drive to one of the 30 lakes in the county with easy access. These include Copco Lake, Iron Gate Reservoir, Meiss Lake, McCloud Reservoir, Lake Shastina and Lake Siskiyou. Sport-sized trout are ready to catch from spring to fall, with a large variety of other fish. Two lakes, Juanita Lake off Highway 97 near Macdoel, and Kangaroo Lake off Highway 3 east of Callahan, offer wheelchair fishing access. For more on lake and river fishing, see our fishing page.

  Activities for Seniors with Grandchildren
lake Go for a swim in Lake Siskiyou with its many points of access along North Shore or from W.A. Barr Road. Cross the lake in a patio boat rented from the Lake Siskiyou Camp-Resort. The Resort also has a beach with a volleyball court and horseshoe pits. Take the kids out on the lake in a kayak, canoe or pedal boat from the Resort. While you're out there, throw a line in the lake to see if you can hook a big one.

Share a river rafting trip on the Gentle Klamath, where families can enjoy a day of floating down this peaceful stretch of river. The kids can swim around the boat as you float down stream, or request inflatable kayaks from any of the rafting companies that run the Klamath River. Be sure to take lots of sunscreen for a wonderful day in the sun. To contact rafting companies that run the Gentle Klamath and other sections of the Klamath, see our rafting page.

Come to the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms in beautiful Shasta Valley, just north of Weed, for a wonderful (and fragrant) adventure. Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms is a working farm and seasonal destination where the views of Mt. Shasta are as intoxicating as the fragrance from the purple fields. Roam acres of lavender and cut a basketful to take home, enjoy our quality products, and sip lavender lemonade as you also refresh your spirit.

Take the grandkids to any of the small town festivals throughout the Mount Shasta Region. Kids will enjoy the activities at Mt. Shasta's Fourth of July Celebration or the trip back in time during McCloud's Civil War Days. Head over to Etna for the Etna Old Timers Rodeo in July for a fun taste of the Wild West or have a stompin' good time at the Bigfoot Jamboree in Happy Camp in late summer. And don't miss the wonderful County Fair held in Yreka each year in early August...a full week of carnival rides, livestock displays, 4H exhibits, music, food and fun! Check our small town festivals page to find more small town festivals for both kids and adults to enjoy.

Enjoy high tea at Ms. Lynn's Tea Shoppe in Montague, just east of Yreka, for delicius foods in an utterly charming atmosphere...."Where grownups can be children, and children can be grown up." (Hint - it's a great treat for the grandkids!) Enjoy a place set outside of time and an experience you will long remember. Play dress up with elegant hats, boas, gloves and costume jewelry. Select from a large variety of teas, both flavored and basic. Choose from lunch, Sunday brunch, dessert, or our special tea menus. The food is delicious and the service is down home. Ms. Lynn's welcomes you to relax and take the time you deserve to escape and reflect, enjoying your company or your time alone.

Visit the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery where kids can look in on ponds of small fry fish. Call ahead to find out about special kids' days when the young ones can throw a line in the pond and hook a whopper. Then walk next door the the Sisson Museum to explore the history of the area, a new Girl Scouts display, and Search and Rescue exhibits. For more information, contact the Sisson Museum at 530-926-5508 or stop by at 1 North Old Stage Road in Mt. Shasta.
