Electro Mechanical Technician Training Program

The Electro Mechanical Technician Training Program (EMTP) is a work-study program designed to:

  • Develop employability skills in individuals,
  • Promote the concept of and provide access to higher education opportunities for members of the workforce in New Mexico, and
  • Create a pool of qualified individuals from which LANL can draw for technician positions.

Program specifics

This highly successful program is co-sponsored by LANL and the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) and has been in existence since 1996. Upon successful completion of the two-year training program, students are awarded a certificate in Electro Mechanical Technology. Continued employment at the Laboratory is a possibility, depending on position availability, funding, and positive evaluations. Historically, more than 90% of each graduating class has been converted to regular employment status within the Laboratory.

Selected individuals will be assigned to work under the guidance of Laboratory technical staff members or senior technicians. They will assist Laboratory personnel with routine tasks and basic projects requiring electro mechanical skills and with other duties as required. Laboratory mentors will evaluate all program participants for content knowledge, work performance ,and progress. Selected individuals must commit to complete the two-year program.

A portion of the student employee's workday will be spent at the UNM-LA campus attending academic courses especially designed for and related to their Laboratory positions. Students will maintain a GPA of 2.0. As per the LANL tuition reimbursement policy, the student's costs for tuition, books, and fees will be reimbursed at the end of each semester. Financial arrangements can be made with the UNM-LA Financial Aid office.

Upon successful completion of the two-year training program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Electro Mechanical Technology. Continued employment at the Laboratory is a possibility, depending upon position availability, funding, and positive evaluations.

Starting salary is $8.85 per hour. Upon successful completion of each semester, a $.75 per hour raise will be authorized.
