United We Ride Community Leadership Awards on Effective Public Transit Human Services Transportation Coordination, Planning & Implementation

The Federal Interagency Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility is announcing the 2008 National United We Ride (UWR) Leadership Awards Program. This non-monetary award recognizes states, localities, communities or organizations that have provided leadership and action toward developing and/or implementing exemplary, high-quality, coordinated human service transportation programs or systems. Nominations should be submitted electronically no later than 5:00 p.m., on October 31, 2008.

18th National Conference on Rural Public & Intercity Bus Transportation

DOT Publishes Updated Air Carrier Access Act Regulations

On May 13, 2008 the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued new regulations under the Air Carrier Access Act which prohibits discrimination by air carriers on the basis of disability. The regulations cover boarding and aircraft access, including seating, lavatories, mobility aid storage and transport, and provision on onboard wheelchairs, as well as air carrier policies and practices, terminal accessibility and other topics.

Emerging Trends & People with Disabilities: Public Consultation

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is gathering public input for a study of emerging issues and trends affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Information gathered will be used in the development of NCD's next annual progress report to the President and Congress. The Council is seeking input on disability issues including health, housing, employment, insurance, transportation, assistive technology, recreation, emergency preparedness, early intervention and education. Suggestions should be sent to NCD by July 22, 2008 via email - type "Emerging Trends" in the subject line.
