National Council on Disability (NCD) Releases Annual Report

On March 31, 2009 NCD released its annual report to the President and Congress calling for a new integrated approach to disability policy within the federal government. The report looks at many issues including access to health care, housing and technology, and negative public attitudes and stereotypes about people with disabilities. Disability Employment Innovation Days

Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) now offers a series of Disability Employment Innovation Days focused on technologies and policies that breakdown physical and logistical obstacles for qualified employees with disabilities. The first Employment Innovation Day will be held on April 1, 2009 from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM in Washington, DC.

Customized Employment Training Course

This course, offered April 20-May 18, 2009, provides an overview of customized employment, a process for individualizing the employment relationship between a job seeker and an employer in ways that meet the needs of both. All instruction is Web based and the lectures are in audio format. Register online.

2009 American Bar Association Conference on the Employment of Lawyers with Disabilities

This conference will be held June 15-16, 2009 in Washington, DC. This program aims to encourage large legal employers, particularly corporations and law firms, to sign pledges to promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace with an emphasis on hiring and retaining lawyers with disabilities.

APSE Conference: Employment for All

This conference will focus exclusively on facilitating integrated employment outcomes for people with significant disabilities. Conference will take place June 30-July 2, 2009 in Milwaukee, WI.

EXCEL Conference

Examining Conflicts in Employment Law (EXCEL) is the premier training conference for federal managers, supervisors and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) practitioners. This annual EEO conference is sponsored by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency responsible for enforcement of EEO laws in the Federal and private sectors. The 2009 conference will be held in New Orleans, LA from July 27-30, 2009.

2009 US Business Leadership Network's (BLN) 12th Annual Conference & National Career Fair

The 2009 Annual Conference, Connecting The Dots: Business Solutions, is for business, community leaders and BLN affiliates that have an interest in hiring, retaining and marketing to people with disabilities. The event will be held September 15-18, 2009 at the National Harbor near Washington, DC. Pre-registration deadline is April 30, 2009.

Database of More Than 1,900 Job Candidates with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Labor has made available to employers nationwide a free database of 1,921 job candidates with disabilities seeking employment in a wide variety of fields. Federal employers can tap into this ongoing recruitment resource online through the Workforce Recruitment Program, and private sector, other government and nonprofit employers can request unlimited searches by calling the Labor Department's Employer Assistance and Recruiting Network at 866-327-6669.

ODEP Releases Roadmaps II

The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has released a follow up to last year's Roadmaps for Enhancing Employment of Persons with Disabilities Through Accessible Technology (AT). Roadmaps II provides an overview of federally funded AT programs; a summary of some of the barriers that affect the use of AT by individuals with disabilities; and recommendations to increase the employment of individuals with disabilities though AT. Recovery Act Provides $5 Billion to Assist Needy Families

Information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about a new Emergency Fund, established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which will help states serve more families seeking employment opportunities and other forms of assistance during the economic downturn. It provides up to an additional $5 billion in emergency funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

U.S. Labor Department Seeks Public Comments on Mental Health Parity & Addiction Equity Act of 2008

The U.S. Departments of Labor, Treasury and Health & Human Services have published a request for information (RFI) soliciting public comments before developing rulemakings on group health plans. The public may submit comments electronically by email to E-OHPSCA.EBSA@dol.gov or through Regulations.gov. Comments are due by May 28, 2009.

Work Incentive Seminars (WISE) Events

The Social Security Administration's Work Incentive Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Projects host free community events for beneficiaries with disabilities and their families to learn more about the possibility of work and resources in their community. People with disabilities, family members, employers, Employment Networks, Vocational Rehabilitation, Protection and Advocacy Services and other community partners are invited to attend.
