Activities & People
Oregon Sea Grant is, at heart, its people: A team of academic, research and outreach faculty and staff from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines conducting science and delivering the results to a variety of interconnected publics:
- Those who live and work on Oregon's coast, and those who visit to enjoy its sweeping natural beauty, temperate climate, and fascinating activities.
- Students, from kindergarteners through PhD candidates, who benefit from what we have to teach and the experience we can provide them as they learn about the ocean and coast.
- Business, including the fishing, seafood processing, and tourist industries, who provide jobs and support the coastal economy.
- Our colleagues in science and academic pursuits, not just in Oregon but around the nation - through the 30-state Sea Grant network - and the world.
- The agencies that manage our precious coastal and marine resources, and who turn to us for research, outreach, education, and publishing expertise.
- State and national leaders, who depend on us for solid, peer-reviewed science that helps them make complex decisions about the issues facing America's coastal states.
- A growing number of Internet users who find us while looking for information and answers to their own questions about marine science topics large ("Why are salmon in decline?" "What causes the sand to disappear from one part of the coast and pile up on another?" "Who were the first residents of the Oregon coast, and how did they live?") and small ("What is this thing I found on the beach?")
Sea Grant's program emphasis is flexible, and changes over time to meet changing local, state and national needs. Mandates and funding opportunities from Congress, NOAA and the National Sea Grant Program help direct where we put our limited resources, but so do the needs and concerns of local stakeholders, as expressed in meetings, workshops, and by the citizen members of our Advisory Council.
Visit our Program Themes section to learn more about the things we study and teach, from the potential effects of earthquakes and tsunamis on coastal communities to new ways to process seafood to get the most value and quality out of the catch. Browse through our catalogue of publications and videos for titles that may pique your interest, whether you're looking for a poster showing the all the shark species of the Pacific, a manual on how to smoke fish safely at home, a report on the state of our nation's coasts or a fact sheet about the flotsam, jetsam and wrack you might find on a visit to the beach.
