What is service-learning?

Service-learning is a reciprocal learning experience that connects academic curriculum with thoughtfully organized service, which meets the needs of a local community. -- Marshalltown Community College

Service-learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking, and civic responsibility. Service-learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community. -- Community College National Center for Community Engagement

A service-learning program provides educational experiences that enhance what is taught by extending student learning beyond the classroom and into the community. -- Corporation for National & Community Service

MCC's service-learning missionMarshalltown Community College Service Learning students

The mission of service-learning at Marshalltown Community College is directly related to the core values of the college, particularly the value of Partnerships: We build. We construct effective alliances that create educational opportunities, strengthen our partners, and spark economic development. By incorporating service into the academic curriculum, our college seeks to help serve the needs of the community while enhancing the academic and personal development of our students.
