  • Lap top computer - this would be used by staff at organizational meetings to take minutes of the meeting, as well as to use for showing PowerPoint presentations. It would also useful to have organizational information on the laptop at meetings to be able to access it and save paper by not having to print back-up information out in case it is needed at a meeting.

Sierra Nevada Alliance
PO Box 7989
South Lake Tahoe, CA 96158

The Sierra Nevada Alliance, a non-profit organization has been restoring and protecting the Sierra's majestic mountains, roaring rivers, still clear waters, rural communities, and teeming wildlife since 1993. Our organization has grown from 5 staff to 16 in the last three years. We dedicate the majority of our funds to program work and therefore are experiencing some difficulty in supplying staff with sufficient technology and equipment to maintain our productivity and accomplish our great work. The donation of any of the items listed below will help our office run more smoothly and allow us to dedicate more funds to our on the ground conservation work.

Georgia River Network

Wishlist:

  • Laptop computer - our new Administrative Assistant is using an antique computer that slows down her work tremendously. For her to be most effective, we need to equip her with a more up-to-date computer.
  • Frequent flyer miles - with the cost of airfare going up, and many unused frequent flyer miles in the accounts of business travelers, it would be great to book miles through a frequent flyer friend.

Service donations:

  • Computer maintenance - Reviewing our network and making some much needed updates would help all of us to work more efficiently. At $90/hour, we hesitate to call a local computer guru.
  • Marketing communication - Reviewing and updating our communication tools would refresh our look and ensure that we maximize the potential for successful mailings and "stay time" on our web site.
  • Accountants - we all need them. Would anyone like to donate their services?
  • Office supplies - copy paper, flip charts, etc., easels - While we try to minimize our usage, it's inevitable that we will need paper and other supplies for mailings and training sessions. Having a friendly donor would be great.
  • Vacuum cleaner - Used would be great! We rely on infrequent cleaning services and it would be great to pick up a used vacuum cleaner.
  • Canoes - new or used for our annual Paddle Georgia event. We use them as prizes for the canoe-a-thon and paddlers may need to pick up a canoe for their expedition.
  • Kitchen appliances and supplies for our office and board meetings - coffee maker, silverware, platters, bowls, cups, etc. to avoid using disposable kitchenware.

PO BOX 24567
Baltimore, MD 21214

Wishlist:

  • Truck - What we really need is a truck that would be used in our watershed restoration work-primarily moving people and plants that we grow in our nursery to the job sites. A 4-person cab would be ideal, so we can transport volunteers and our summer crew members. (We do have a proposal in to a foundation, we should hear from them soon.)

Otherwise:

  • Assorted field supplies that would be used in our environmental education programs. At the Herring Run Watershed Center, which opened in September, we are only 2 blocks away from the Herring Run stream. Our plan is to take children there where they will collect samples. Then, they will examine what they find in our classroom laboratory.
  • Waders in small sizes for elementary age children
  • Fishing nets
  • Insect nets
  • Binoculars

Wishlist:

  • Canoes/Kayaks and Canoe Rack: IRWA's new home on the Ipswich River, Riverbend, is open to the public for walking, birding, fishing, canoeing, nature study, snowshoeing and other (non-vehicular) recreation. We are working to create a canoe landing at Riverbend, and hope to offer canoes and kayaks to those who wish to paddle this outstanding (and underpaddled) stretch of the river.
  • Watershed Model: IRWA has plans to create a visitor's center at our new headquarters, Riverbend. We would like to include a watershed model to help educate the public on how watersheds function.
  • Bamboo blinds: We need blinds for our new offices so that we can see our computer screens!

  • Digital cameras - MRWC does not own a single camera! We currently have no way of photographically documenting any oddly colored discharges into our river that we may find, nor can we record the success of our river clean-ups or water quality monitoring by photographing the efforts of our hardworking volunteers. While any working digital camera would be great, we are especially interested in waterproof/water resistant models such as the Olympus Stylus series.
  • Garmin 76 CSx GPS units - We conduct our water quality monitoring by boat, so we need to use GPS units to return to the same monitoring station each month, and the units we use now are on loan. The Garmin 76 CSx units are handheld units specifically designed for marine use, and they are not only waterproof but apparently float. We hope to never test that latter feature!
  • Laptop or Desktop computers (less than 2 years old) - All of MRWC's computers are at least 5 years old, and their memory capacity and processors are no longer up to the standards necessary for current software. Our office efficiency would improve greatly with more powerful computers.
  • Document shredder - MRWC is a member driven organization, and many of our members sign-up or renew their memberships by giving us credit card information. Please help us protect our generous members by donating a document shredder that will help us process donations more securely.
  • Small, hard-sided coolers - MRWC's water quality monitoring includes collecting water samples for bacteria analysis at the lab, and the water samples need to be kept on ice during delivery in order to maintain the integrity of the data. We need several small, hard sided coolers to send out with our volunteer water quality monitors. That way, they can use their own coolers for personal snacks!
  • Laminator - We need a laminating machine to create both wear-proof education and outreach displays and water-proof water quality monitoring maps and instructions. Our volunteers are out there, rain or shine!
  • Office chairs - Are you remodeling? Is your office downsizing? We desperately need new office chairs, as ours are literally falling apart underneath us.
  • Plotter - This one is asking for a lot, but we could use a large format color printer (often known as a plotter), to print large maps and signs for our education and outreach displays.

Thank you very much!

  • Digital Videorecorder (This will assist us in monitor resource extraction activities in our watershed)
  • Laser Printing (This will reduce our out of house printing costs)
  • Adobe CS3 software (This will help us create and read pdf documents, create and edit imagery, etc)
  • Palm Pilots (This will help us jump start our Nature Mapping program in which volunteers use Palm Pilots to record information in the watershed)

  • Computer - We are an entirely volunteer-run organization and all of our files are being held on individual members' computers. We would like to have a single machine where all of the files are held (with individual members holding backups). We would prefer a loptop so that different members may use it as needed, but we would also be glad to have a desktop system.
  • Camera - Again, all of our photographs of our sites and at events have been taken by volunteers who happened to bring a camera. We would like to have a digital camera of our own.
  • Gardening tools - We recently won a grant to do riparian habitat restoration along the river des Peres. We have a few tools of our own and others we can borrow, but the more the merrier. We need loppers, clippers, hand trowels, shovels, dibble bars, and anything in-between.
  • Gifts/Prizes - We are always looking for ways to recognize our many hard-working volunteers. We have given away native plants, native plant seed, binoculars, canvas bags, books, and other items to our volunteers to thank them. We are open to
donations of any items that we can use to give a little back to the volunteers who give us so much!

Our Land Trust recently acquired an 82 acre high quality wetland area whose southern border is the Dead River, the first tributary to the Passaic River, in its high headwaters. A major goal is to remove invasive species and control deer. We want to do an experiment to keep the deer out of a portion of this property to see if that helps in restoring the underbrush.

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is in exciting time of organizational growth. After moving to a new location earlier this year, we are increasing staff that is resulting in new programs to protect the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers. Upgrades to our design software and website software are needed to allow for the organization to reach a new level of communications that can be produced in-house. A video camera would be used to video volunteer trainings and other communications project associated with our advocacy program. Lastly, general office supplies, bookshelves, and cabinets are needed for our hardworking staff and interns.

Wishlist:

  • 4-stroke Jet ski or john-boat with 4-stroke motor, and trailer - The Catawba River includes a series of lakes spread out over 225 miles and we frequently receive calls asking us to investigate an issue on one ofthe lakes. If possible, we use a kayak to investigate issues, but in many cases it is necessary to cover many miles of the river/lake to find the source of the problem, and it is necessary for us to use a boat. Our existing boat is heavy so it requires a fuel-guzzling vehicle to tow the boat and the boat has an old unreliable and inefficient 2-stroke motor. It would be very helpful to have motorized watercraft that could be towed behind a small car.
  • 80-100 hp 4-stroke motor for existing boat - As an alternative to a smaller watercraft, we could simply get a more efficient and reliable motor for our existing boat.
  • Conference room table that is 10-12 feet long and comfortably seats at least 10 people (and chairs) - Our existing conference table is too small for the room and inadequate for many meetings that we have in our office.

Wishlist:

  • CAR: We work in the New River's entire watershed, so that's three states (NC, VA & WV)! Our main office is in NC, making travel expensive -- we really could use a staff car, one that gets great gas mileage of course -- we don't care what it looks like! Our local rental outlet closed its office, so we can't even rent a car when we need it efficiently. Travel reimbursements bust our budget - help!
  • LAPTOP: When we are on the road in our three-state watershed, it sure would be great for our staff to be able to take a laptop with them, specifically for landowner visits, monitoring reports, and fundraising prospecting. It would be extra great if it were one that's designed specifically for travel/field work. That would make our year!
  • PRINTER: Our current printer keeps chugging away, but the noises it's started emitting are getting a little frightening... it may not be long for this world. It's certainly living now beyond its projected lifespan. A new color laserjet -- one that prints large formats -- would be a dream come true. As it is, we've got to go offsite to print maps beyond letter/legal size and we're just crossing our fingers on the regular print jobs we do.

Wishlist:

  • Folding Tables - The Raccoon Creek Partnership (RCP) holds monthly meetings at the center as well as a variety of children's programs. Tables would be used for general meetings, arts, crafts, games, dinners and presentations.
  • Computer (laptop or desktop) - In the near future, we hope to have watershed staff/volunteers stationed at the center several days per week so that the public may come in and visit, pick up information, and learn about the watershed. We are in need of a decent computer (must be able to access the internet) for data entry and other watershed work.
  • Printer (all in one print, copy, fax, scan would be GREAT!)- A printer would be helpful for printing meeting agendas, brochures, activities, spreadsheets...
  • Printer cartridges and paper
  • Fax machine
  • Laminator and supplies - Many of the programs and day camps held at the center are outside and around water! It would be very helpful to be able to laminate identification cards, pictures, etc. that will be used outside.
  • File cabinet and folders - for storage of important documents.
  • Aquariums and aquarium supplies - for the temporary housing of collected creatures during children's events and programs.
  • Small Refrigerator - To keep water samples cold prior to shipment to the lab and for food storage.
  • Microwave
  • Telephone and answering machine
  • Plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, silverware... - The RCP annual member's dinner has been held at the Waterloo Aquatic Education Center for the past 2 years. In the past, we have used disposable plates, cups, etc but would like to avoid this in the future. We're not picky! Nothing needs to match, as long as it's functional, we can use it!
  • Craft supplies and office supplies (markers, easel, paper, crayons, pens, pencils, scissors, tape, paint...)

  • Vouchers for plane tickets (e.g. from frequent flyer programs). Through the years, the ability to send staff to national conferences for training has been absolutely invaluable. This year we would like to send key staff to the annual River Rally in Baltimore, and to the Waterkeeper Alliance meeting in New York City. Plane ticket vouchers can help make this goal a reality.
  • Laser color printer: Being able to communicate our message with color images and maps really is worth one-thousand words. We are improving our graphics and mapping capabilities with GIS software, new images from the field, etc., but can only print in black and white. • Polycom (phone for conference calling): our current meeting room phone is a regular desktop phone, rather than a phone suited for multiple persons in a larger room.
