MCC Admissions

Admissions FAQs

When should I apply for admission? Applications for admission are accepted anytime prior to the start of the semester you are interested in enrolling. If you are a high school junior, you may apply to MCC after April 1. Early applicants have an advantage in meeting scholarship and financial aid deadlines.

How long will it take to process my application? You should receive an acceptance letter from the Admissions Office within two to three weeks upon receipt of your application, transcripts, and ACT/COMPASS scores.

How do I request transcripts to be sent to the Admissions Office? For high school transcripts, call the high school where you graduated and tell them to release your transcripts to MCC. If you received your GED, simply call the center where you took the tests and request for your transcript to be sent to MCC. If you have attended any college, regardless of how many credits you received, MCC requires these transcripts to be on file in the Admissions Office. Most colleges will need your request in writing for the transcript to be released.

How will I know which classes from my previous college(s) will transfer to MCC? Transfer credits will not be evaluated until the student has applied for admission and furnished the Office of Admissions with official transcripts. Upon admission to MCC, all credits earned or attempted and all grades received in college-level courses at accredited institutions are evaluated and core-curriculum determinations are made by the Registrar's Office. These transfer course evaluations are then mailed to the student's permanent address.

How do I find information about taking the ACT or SAT test? ACT or SAT scores are not required for acceptance into MCC but may be submitted in place of COMPASS or ASSET scores. MCC accepts ACT or SAT scores if the test was taken within the last five years. High school students should contact their Counseling Office for dates and locations. MCC's Career Testing and Placement Center can also provide dates and locations for the national test as well as for those tests offered at Marshalltown Community College. You can reach the Career Testing and Placement Center by calling (641) 752-7106 ext. 5781.

I've received my acceptance letter into MCC, now what? You will be invited to a New Student Registration to register for classes. If you have applied for the fall semester, we have registrations scheduled throughout the summer. If you have applied for the spring semester, we have registrations scheduled in December.

How do I register for classes? You can register for classes at one of our New Student Orientations.

What is New Student Registration? New Student Registration is where you meet your assigned academic advisor, register for classes, and learn more about getting involved in the organizations and student activities at MCC. There is also a session for parents to help answer any questions they may have about our college.

What is Marshalltown Community College's FAFSA code for Federal Financial Aid? MCC's FAFSA code is 001875. The address for the MCC Financial Aid Office is 3700 S. Center Street, Marshalltown, IA.

What is a credit hour? A credit hour is the amount of time you are required to spend in the classroom. When you take a course for three hours of credit, this means you will typically be required to spend three hours per week in the classroom. A class may be worth one, two, three, or four credits. The AA or "transfer" degree at MCC requires 64 credit hours. A Bachelor of Arts or four-year degree from another college or university would require approximately 120-130 credit hours.

What are "Fab Fridays?" Fab Fridays are simply a great way to learn more about college and MCC! The Admissions Office has designated various Fridays or Saturdays for students to visit campus. You will receive a campus tour, an opportunity to meet the instructors and talk with current students, and information on costs and financial aid.

How do I receive a schedule of classes being offered? A complete listing of our class schedule is available on the MCC website . If you would like a hard copy, call the Admissions Office at (641) 752-7106 ext. 5710 and we will be happy to mail one to you. Class schedules may also be picked up outside of the Registrar's Office on campus or in the Admissions Office.

Why do I need to speak with an academic advisor? Full-time students are assigned an academic advisor from the faculty who helps in choosing courses and seeing that the appropriate coursework is taken to assure graduation, transfer, or completion of a career program. Regular contact with your advisor is extremely important. However, it is the responsibility of the student to be certain that the courses selected will meet the requirements for the degree sought. It's your education and your future!

How do I know who my advisor is? An advisor is assigned to each student based on the program that was selected on the admission application. For example, if you applied for the nursing program, your advisor would most likely be someone from the Health Occupations Department.

What is a student ID card? A student ID card is identification that you are enrolled at MCC for the current semester. ID cards allow you to check out books in the MCC library, use any of the computers in the labs, or get into athletic events free of charge.

How do I get a student ID card?
Students can stop in the Registrars Office one week before classes start to pick up their ID. ID cards are issued new to the student at the beginning of each semester.
