MCC Athletics

MCC Athletics Requirements
The college sponsors intercollegiate athletic teams in golf and basketball. Marshalltown Community College is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and the National Junior College Athletic Association. The following are established criteria for participation in athletics at Marshalltown Community College as reflecting the policies and procedures of the institution and based upon the policies as reflected in the current NJCAA Handbook:

  1. Students must be high school graduates or have received a high school equivalency diploma or have been certified by passing a national test such as the General Education Development (GED) Test
  2. Non-high school graduates can establish eligibility for athletic participation by completing one term of college work (passing 12 credits with a 1.75 grade point average or higher). This term must be taken after the student's high school class is graduated.
  3. The NJCAA has established criteria for student-athletes to be eligible to compete.
Student-athletes must pass 12 semester hours with a grade point average of 1.75 or higher the semester prior to their first year of athletic competition. For sports like basketball, which encompasses both semesters, an athlete must pass 12 semester hours during his/her first semester to be eligible during second semester. All athletes must pass 24 semester hours with a 2.00 grade point average and pass 12 hours in their previous term with a 1.75 grade point average to be eligible during the second year of competition. Official transcript(s) of all previous schools attended must be on file in the MCC Admissions Office; this includes high school as well as all colleges attended. Transcript(s) should be on file prior to enrollment but must be received before the eligibility roster is sent to the National Office.

It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to make sure this process is taken care of before enrolling at MCC. All student-athletes participating in any one of the sports mentioned above must have passed a physical examination administered by a qualified health care professional licensed to administer physical examinations prior to the first practice for each collegiate year in which the student-athlete competes.

The student-athlete's attendance in class is essential to ensure success in the classroom. In the event a student must miss class for a scheduled event, the instructors are to be notified. It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to communicate with the instructor in order to schedule any make-up work that must be completed.

Students interested in participating in intercollegiate athletics at MCC should contact the Athletic Director. Any students participating in intercollegiate athletics must have evidence of current health insurance coverage and a physical form on file before participating.
