Land revitalization and reuse of contaminated sites is a top priority of EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) and applies across all cleanup programs to help foster economic development and better environmental results for communities. Ongoing revitalization/reuse efforts include Brownfields (federal), Superfund site recycling, USTFields, RCRA Brownfields, Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), State programs (such as Voluntary Cleanup, Brownfields, and Superfund), and private sector initiatives.

This Directory provides information about federal agencies, including 37 organizations, that may be able to provide technical assistance in the selection and use of technologies to characterize and clean up properties for land revitalization and reuse. The directory presents a profile of each organization that includes:

• Background and location information
• Relevancy to land revitalization
• A description of the area(s) of expertise available
• A discussion of the types of services available
• Types of funding available and eligibility
• Contact information and the process for requesting assistance
• Representative success stories

In addition, the profiles include examples of specific instances where the organization has previously provided support relevant to land revitalization.

Stakeholders

The stakeholders involved in land revitalization projects include city planners, real estate developers, consultants, citizens' groups, private and public interest groups, financial institutions, technology developers and vendors, regional EPA brownfields coordinators, and state, local, and tribal brownfields coordinators. Many of those stakeholders may not have extensive experience with site assessments and cleanup activities; therefore, they may not be aware of the full range of technology options available to them. However, as the stakeholders make, review, and approve decisions about technologies chosen to investigate or clean up land revitalization properties, it is essential that they understand such technologies and how they impact the cost and duration of the land revitalization activity to achieve the desired environmentally effective outcome.
