Program Overview

Nursing is a healing art and a caring science. Over the centuries, the practice of nursing has evolved along with the knowledge, technology and social forces that shape it. The values that underlie the profession of nursing are timeless, and include concern for the welfare of others, social justice and personal integrity.

Colby-Sawyer College confers a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing. The Nursing Program integrates the liberal arts and sciences with the professional education required for nursing practice. Our graduates take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses, assume entry-level positions in professional nursing and are prepared for graduate studies. The Nursing Program is approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing and received a 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education in the fall of 2002.

Program Highlights

Small classes within a dynamic program.

Due to its small size, Colby-Sawyer's Nursing Program has the flexibility to readily respond to changes in nursing education and practice. Nursing students enjoy small classes, close peer support and individual attention from faculty.

Small class sizes are also more conducive to more faculty-student interaction, enabling students to actively engage in the learning process and to develop strong critical thinking skills.

Community-based nursing education

Community-based nursing education requires a partnership between the college and the community agencies that share responsibility for educating students.

Our Community Partners Group includes Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), the Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice (LSRVNA), and others.

Nursing leaders from these agencies helped us to design the curriculum for the Nursing Program as a way of ensuring that our students would be ready for practice in a variety of settings.

State-of-the-art teaching-learning technology

The Nursing Laboratory includes a state-of-the-art simulated hospital environment in which students can develop the essential skills for entry level practice.

Equipment includes a head wall unit and a high-tech bed with built-in oxygen and suction apparatus monitor, electronic vital signs monitor, defibrillator, and specialty intravenous pump. Students use the Nursing Laboratory to practice essential skills prior to performing them in clinical situations.

Comprehensive curriculum rooted in liberal arts and sciences

Nursing is a dynamic and ancient profession that continues to evolve to meet the needs of the sick and the dying, of those who wish to be well, and of families and communities. At Colby-Sawyer College, we want our students to be as skilled in the art of therapeutic relationships as they are in high-tech care and to be knowledgeable in current health care practices and policies.

Our faculty believe that caring for our fellow human beings requires that nurses have a foundation in the natural and social sciences. Therefore, the nursing program is strongly rooted in the liberal arts, sciences and literature that are the core of the Colby-Sawyer's Liberal Education Program.

Access to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center resources

Colby-Sawyer nursing students benefit from our relationship with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), where many students do their inpatient clinical internships and have access to the Biomedical Library.

DHMC has also offered several Colby-Sawyer nursing students wonderful summer externship/internship experiences which have led to entry level positions at DHMC.

Library and Computing Facilities

The Susan Colgate Cleveland Library/Learning Center houses the computers reserved for use by nursing students. Software includes study guides for NCLEX, simulations of clinical situations and self-guided programs on a number of clinical topics.
