Open Source Involvement

Since Phase2's inception, open source technology has been a critical component of every technical solution we have delivered. Phase2 is an active contributor and participant in many projects contributing our team's time, code and thought leadership to open source.

Phase2 has an especially strong commitment to the following open source projects:

Drupal

Drupal is open source social publishing software that empowers individuals, teams, and communities to easily publish, manage and organize a wide variety of content on a website. Tens of thousands of people and organizations have used Drupal to power scores of different web sites, including community web portals, corporate web sites, social networking sites and much more. For more information on Drupal, go to www.drupal.org.

Phase2 is widely recognized as a leading implementor of the Drupal content management platform. The Phase2 development team has been highly active in the Drupal community for several years making many important contributions and developing our own modules. Many leading organizations turn to our firm's nationally recognized expertise to plan, design, upgrade, integrate or extend Drupal.

Java

The Java platform is unique in that it's a software-only platform that runs on top of other hardware-based platforms. Hence, the Java Platform lets you develop and deploy Java applications on desktops and servers, as well as today's demanding embedded and real-time environments. Java also includes classes that support the development of web services and provides the foundation for enterprise development.

The Phase2 development team has been practicing Java development since the mid 90's when it started. We have been strong proponents of the technology and tools in the J2EE space ever since. Some key tools and technologies we use heavily and have contributed to include:

  • JBoss
  • Tomcat
  • Struts2
  • Hibernate
  • SiteMesh
  • Ant

LAMP (Linux, Apache, mySQL, PHP/Perl/Python)

The acronym LAMP refers to a set of free software programs commonly used together to run dynamic Web sites or servers that includes the following:

  • Linux, the operating system;
  • Apache, the Web server;
  • MySQL, the database management system (or database server);
  • PHP, Perl, Python scripting/programming languages.

Phase2 develops and manages applications for the LAMP stack because it is the fastest growing and most reliable open source enterprise software stack. Many leading edge sites and companies use LAMP as an alternative to expensive proprietary software stacks because of its lower cost and freedom from platform lock-in.

CiviCRM

CiviCRM is a powerful contact, fundraising and eCRM system that allows you to record and manage information about your various constituents including volunteers, activists, donors, employees, clients, vendors, etc. Track and execute donations, transactions, conversations, events or any type of correspondence with each constituent and store it all in one, easily accessible and manageable source.CiviCRM is web-based, open source, internationalized, and designed specifically to meet the needs of advocacy, non-profit and non-governmental groups. CiviCRM is created by an open source community coordinated by CiviCRM LLC, and the 501c3 non-profit Social Source Foundation.

Phase2 has implemented CiviCRM for non-profits to assist with fundraising, constituent relationship management and to provide full member data collection through Drupal. We have participated in module development and been featured in case studies: on how to use the tool effectively.

Calais

Calais is a Semantic Web service that enables publishers to automatically metatag the people, places, facts and events in their content to increase its search accessibility on the Web. The Calais initiative supports the interoperability of content and advances Thomson Reuters mission to deliver pervasive intelligent information. It leverages the company's substantial investment in semantic technologies and Natural Language Processing to offer free metadata generation services, developer tools and an open standard for the generation of semantic content. For more information or to get started with the Calais API, go to www.OpenCalais.com.

Phase2 developed the Calais Drupal module to incorporate the Calais web service into the Drupal platform in partnership with Thomson Reuters. The Calais module for Drupal is feature-rich, highly intuitive and designed to make it easy for Drupal users to automatically metatag their content, generating rich Semantic metadata that can be shared via a simple key and integrated into the larger content universe. The Drupal module uses the power of Calais to suggest terms for association within a piece of content, similar to how del.icio.us recommends relevant tags.

InfoGlue

InfoGlue is an advanced, scalable and robust content management and portal platform written in 100% Java. Key features includes full multi-language support, good reuse between sites and extensive integration capabilities as well as JSR 168-support. For more information, go to www.infoglue.org.

Phase2 contributed heavily to the development of this CMS project in its early stages and has expertise in its implementation and architecture.
