Salinity Maps

thumbnail version of a salinity map

The foraminifer species listed below are links to salinity maps of Biscayne Bay & Florida Bay. Percent abundance of each species was contoured and laid over salinity data for either August or October 1996.

Scientists will use this modern data to determine salinity ranges in which each foraminifer species is most abundant. Then when scientists study the foraminifers in sediment cores, they can use this modern relationship between salinity and percent abundance to determine the paleosalinity at sites throughout the Bay.

The maps on this page are PDF files. In order to view these maps, you will need to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader©.
