The Sea-floor Mapping Group at the Woods Hole Science Center has been heavily involved in the collection of low to high resolution sidescan-sonar data for over two decades. At this time, we primarily utilize high-resolution (~100 and 500 kHz) sidescan-sonar systems developed by various manufacturers. We acquire, process, and archive data in the field. The programs used to complete the processing tasks are shown in the diagram to the left. Completing processing in the field enables recently collected sonar mosaics to be incorporated into Geographic Information systems (GIS) and utilized as base maps for ground-truth or sampling investigations during the same field operation.
