Departmental Staff and Associates Staff Jon P. Rebman, Ph.D., Curator, is a specialist in the systematics of the Cactaceae (particularly the genus Cylindropuntia), and in the floristics of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California, Mexico. Judy Gibson, Collection Manager, is charged with the care of the collection, supervision of department volunteers, and management of the department's loans and exchanges. Karen Rich assists with the department's special research projects, including the updating of the Checklist of the Vascular Plants of San Diego County, and development of a checklist of the flora of the peninsula of Baja California. Mary Ann Hawke, Ph.D., Director of the San Diego County Plant Atlas, administers the project and develops support for it. She also represents the museum on regional land managment and ecological issues. Jeannie Gregory, Parabotanist Manager, handles the recruiting, training, and record-keeping for Plant Atlas volunteers, and organizes the processing the specimens the Parabotanists collect from intake to labeling to expert identification to data verification. Layla Aerne is project assistant for the Plant Atlas, helping with training, communication with Parabotanists, and acquiring collecting permits for them, as well as helping the Parabotanist Manager with processing the specimens as they come in. Margie Mulligan, Botanist, performs a variety of roles in the department including field research, scanning botanical slides and photos, and quality control on all Plant Atlas online submissions of collection data. Mary Alice Kessler is georeferencing the locality data for pre-Plant Atlas San Diego County specimens in the herbarium, to provide precision locations for GIS applications and to integrate the older data with the newer Plant Atlas data. Ina Brown, Ph.D., is databasing the older San Diego County specimens in the herbarium, with their often cryptic label information. John Sanborn, Database Specialist, developed the herbarium database in its current SQL server form, developed the website for the San Diego County Plant Atlas, and works continuously to provide more features for both.
