The diversity of the aquatic organisms in Korean, especially in aquaculture species is under  threat as many culture species have been imported from foreign countries and some useful fisheries resources have been continually reduced. Unexpected hybridization between species, making different ecosystem owing to the combinations of new species etc. can lead to the disappearance or some aquatic species of reduction of genetic diversity.

Accordingly, it is critically important to identify between different species with similar morphological characteristics, distinguish between populations for preservation of species diversity and improvement of species  quality with diverse genetic traits.

The goals and the establishments carried out until now in this field are as follows:

Goals

   1. Development of useful marker for identification and variation analysis between species or populations

   2. Evaluation of genetic variations and population structure analysis of Korean aquaculture species and useful fisheries resources

   3. Preservation of gene materials and management of obtained database

Establishment

  • Isozyme analysis
