The Illinois Artisans Program focuses national attention on the rich heritage of the fine crafting that exists in Illinois. The Program markets crafts through Artisans Shops located in the James R. Thompson Center, Chicago; the Museum Store at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield; the Museum Shop at the Dickson Mounds Museum; and the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop at Rend Lake. All areas of arts and crafts, including folk, traditional, contemporary, and ethnic, as well as fine art forms are eligible (Media). Over 1600 artists have been jury selected into the IAP. Once selected, their work can be shown at one or more Illinois Artisans Shops without re-jurying (2009 Application). Application deadlines are March 28th and September 12th, 2009. Juried artists participate in art sprees, craft festivals and other events held at the shops in order to promote their work. | Vase Detail Laurie Shaman Member Since 2001 | To become a juried artist of the Artisans Program, an artist must live and work within the state. Their craft work must then be reviewed and accepted by a jury-panel sponsored by the Program. Twice a year, the Artisans Program organizes a jury of knowledgeable art specialists to review applications from new artists. The Museum Store displays and sells items in keeping with the natural and cultural materials of Illinois as represented in the collections, exhibits, and programming activities of the Museum. A large selection of fine crafts by juried members of the Illinois Artisans Program is showcased and available for purchase.
