New Web-Based Training Course from CDC

Smallpox Vaccine Storage and Handling

The National Immunization Program (NIP)/CDC announces the availability of Smallpox Vaccine Storage and Handling, an interactive web-based training course. The overall goals of this training course are to ensure proper storage, handling, and shipping of the smallpox vaccine by healthcare providers and to support the national emergency preparedness response to bioterrorism events.

This 4-module course covers Vaccine Distribution, Vaccine Storage, Handling the Vaccine: Clinic Issues, and Safeguarding the Vaccine. Additionally, the course includes a glossary, Internet resources, and a section addressing frequently asked questions. Opportunities to test learning are provided through pretests, posttests, and interactive questions and answers. The course also provides practical information on ordering vaccine from the Strategic National Stockpile, monitoring temperature and using proper equipment, reconstituting the vaccine, and developing a vaccine disaster recovery plan.

The audience for this training includes staff in state and local health departments; hospital emergency room technicians, nurses, laboratory workers, and hospital physicians; private physicians; and first responders. The training is also appropriate for clinicians, pharmacists, health educators, and other healthcare providers working in private offices, hospitals, and public health settings.

The program is approved for 2.75 Category 1 Continuing Medical Education credits, 3.1 contact hours for Continuing Nursing Education Credits, 2 ½ Category 1 contact hours for health educators, and .25 Continuing Education Units through the CDC.

The course is available free of charge on the National Immunization Program website at:
