The
purpose and passion for conservation is shared among many. It is shared
between NRCS employees, partners and customers who help people help the land. And it is
shared by the landowners with whom we work. Our passion is manifested
through the benefits derived from stewardship of private lands—benefits we
all enjoy, such as cleaner water and air, improved soils and abundant
wildlife habitat.
Learn about our stories, the stories of
conservation made possible through a shared purpose, a shared passion and a
shared commitment to conservation. |

The Franklin Parish Field Office understands just how important quail is to
Louisiana and to the Southeastern United States. Franklin Parish was once known
for its great quail hunting and clear bayous that stretched across farms along
the Macon Ridge. The Franklin Parish Field Office, eager to restore this area,
has partnered with over 120 landowners throughout the parish with a common
goal--to convert marginal cropland to wildlife habitat primarily to increase the
quail population and reduce soil erosion. The Franklin Parish Field Office is
playing an active role to increase the population of quail in the area.

At one time, Louisiana boasted its landscape with about seven million
acres of longleaf pine habitat. These vast flatwood and savannah forests
were once habitat rich areas that traversed sizable areas of southwestern,
southeastern and central Louisiana. Now, the longleaf pine forest has
quickly disappeared over the past century to only five percent of what it
once was. Currently, about 250,000 acres of longleaf pine habitat can be
found in Louisiana, with most of that on Kisatchie National Forest.

40 % of the nation’s coastal marches are in Louisiana, and 80% of the loss is
occurring in Louisiana. CWPPRA helps the NRCS and our cooperative partnerships
to sustain, protect, restore and enhance coastal wetlands. “Every 30 minutes a
parcel of wetlands the size of a football field disappears,” said Britt Paul,
Louisiana NRCS assistant state conservationist. “Our coastal wetlands are
immensely significant to our nation – we are restoring and protecting one of the
most ecological diverse habitats in our country.”
