Maine NRCS Technical Resources

State Technical Committee members, policy makers, and those establishing technical standards and specifications may find the Conservation Resource Briefs useful in developing sound conservation decisions and policies. The briefs combine scientific studies, data and status reports from NRCS and other organizations on key resource topics of our time.

Conservation Technical Assistance

Conservation Technical Assistance is provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to help individuals, communities, local and state governments, and others plan and implement natural resource conservation systems on their lands. Conservation Technical Assistance is available to reduce erosion, improve soil and water quality, improve and conserve wetlands, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, improve air quality, improve pasture and range land conditions, reduce upstream flooding, and improve woodlands. Conservation Technical Assistance is provided by the NRCS through local conservation districts in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding between the Secretary of Agriculture, the governor of the state, and the conservation district. Assistance is provided to land users who voluntarily wish to apply conservation to their land, and to those who must comply with local, state, or federal laws and regulations. Technical assistance is also provided to participants in USDA’s cost-share and conservation incentive programs.

Conservation Technical Assistance is a free service of the NRCS to our conservation customers, and is provided upon request, based upon priorities established by the agency and the local conservation district.

Electronic Field Office Technical Guide

The Electronic Field Office Technical Guide NRCS is the primary scientific reference used by NRCS in conservation activities. This guide is now available on-line.

Irrigation Pond Information

In cooperation with Federal, State and local agencies and organizations an Irrigation Permit Application Process was developed to streamline the process for individuals requesting assistance.

National Resources Inventory

The National Resources Inventory (NRI) is a statistically based sample of land use and natural resource conditions and trends on U.S. nonfederal lands. The NRCS program for NRI serves as the Federal Government's principal source of information on the status, condition, and trends of soil, water, and related resources in the U.S.

Practice Standards and Specifications

NRCS conservation practice standards provide guidance for applying conservation technology on the land and set the minimum level for acceptable application of the technology. Draft Standards and Specifications for Maine are made available for comment prior to finalizing. Once finalized, Standards and Specifications are available on-line in Section IV of the Electronic Field Office Technical Guide.

Soil Survey Program

Soil survey information is gathered to assist in the management of our natural resources. The NRCS soil survey specialists investigate, inventory, classify and interpret the soils of Maine and help people understand, value and wisely use soil resources. The information is used to determine if land is suitable for farming, grazing, development and engineering and conservation applications.

Technical Service Provider Registry

TechReg (Technical Service Provider Registry), an NRCS Internet application, is available for Technical Service Providers (TSPs) to register and become certified, and for USDA customers to find certified providers.
