Areas of study include coastal forests and ecosystems, food safety and packaging, environmental conservation, and ornamental horticulture, as well as commercial production of timber, food and fiber crops, and livestock.

Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science
Dr. Gene Eidson, Resident Director 843.546.1013
PO Box 596, Georgetown, SC 29442-0596

Scientists at the Baruch Institute study coastal forest and wetland ecosystems, including wildlife, forestry, and hydrology. Future studies will include environmental toxicology, wastewater treatment, and landscape ecology to help commercial developers preserve the area's fragile ecosystems. Future plans also include educational seminars for school groups and the public on the coastal environment and the importance of wise management of natural resources.

Coastal Research and Education Center
Dr. Bob Dufault, Interim  Resident Director 843.402.5399
2700 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29414-5332

Scientists at the Coastal REC develop new vegetable varieties, as well as efficient, economical systems for commercial vegetable production in the coastal region. They also develop post-harvest technology for these crops, such as melons, pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, and asparagus. A new emphasis is being placed on the production and post-harvest handling for medicinal plants, such as echinacea and St. John's Wort.

Edisto Research and Education Center
Dr. John Mueller, Resident Director 803.284.3343
64 Research Road, Blackville, SC 29817-0247

Scientists at the Edisto REC develop new plant varieties and integrated pest management strategies for the row crops produced in the coastal plain region, such as cotton, soybeans, peanuts, canola, small grains, and sweet potatoes. They also develop sustainable management practices for plant crops, as well as beef cattle. Row crop studies include an interseeding system that incorporates deep tillage and double cropping to conserve soil, water, and energy.

Pee Dee Research and Education Center
Dr. Bruce Fortnum, Resident Director 843.662.3526
2200 Pocket Road, Florence, SC 29506-9706

Scientists at the Pee Dee REC study production and management of the major field crops in this section of the coastal plain, including tobacco, cotton, soybeans, corn, peanuts, small grains, and turfgrass. They also develop new crop varieties and new management systems to reduce the environmental impact of crop production and golf course management.

Sandhill Research and Education Center
Dr. Mac Horton, Resident Director 803.788.5700
PO Box 23205, Columbia, SC 29224-3205

Sandhill REC houses Clemson's Center for Community and Economic Development that connects the University to all citizens of South Carolina. Faculty nurture the collaborations that are needed to address the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. They also develop cutting edge research that can be applied in community laboratories throughout the state and provide environmental and community programs for civic leaders and other groups.
