The Mining sector comprised over 300,000 paid workers in 2005 (not counting those in the oil and gas extraction sub-sector). These workers face risks that include falling materials, explosions, fires, powered haulage, overexertion, electrical equipment, and exposure to particulates and dusts including diesel emissions, coal dust and silica dust. The Oil and Gas Extraction Sub Council focuses on workers in industries extracting liquid and gas deposits.
Because essentially all of the nation's occupational safety and health research in the mining sector is funded by NIOSH, research priorities for the nation have been and continue to be established by the NIOSH mining program with the input of the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee (MSHRAC). Instead of defining research priorities, the NORA Mining Sector Council charge specifies a focus on outreach, especially to small mines, by forging new and effective partnerships through the NORA process.
