CFSAN Publishes 2004 Program Priorities

The FY 2004 Program Priorities for FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) have been published. The document lays out the Center's work product expectations for the current fiscal year 2004 (October 1, 2003 through September 30, 2004), and is based on input received our stakeholders, as well as input generated internally, with focus on the question: "Where do we do the most good for consumers and the overall public health?" The work plan is divided into four primary sections:

  1. Assuring Food Safety and Security
  2. Improving Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Safety
  3. Assuring Food and Cosmetic Safety
  4. Assuring Food Safety: Crosscutting Areas

The complete document is one CFSAN's website at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cfsan404.html.

FDA Updates Questions & Answers on Prior Notice of Imported Food
Shipments and Registration of Food Facilities

FDA has updated its guidance documents for industry, one pertaining to prior notice of imported food shipments and one for registration of food facilities. Each guidance document provides a list of questions that have frequently been asked about the requirements of either the prior notice regulation or the registration regulation, and the answers to the questions.

These original and updated documents were issued to help the food industry and others comply with the legal requirements established by these interim final rules. The Guidance for Industry: Questions and Answers Regarding Registration of Food Facilities can be found at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ffregui3.html. The Guidance for Industry: Prior Notice of Imported Foods Questions and Answers can be found at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~pn/pnqagui2.html.

Of particular interest in the prior notice guidance is the new question/response (Question 2.5 under Outreach). "How do I arrange for a presentation by FDA on prior notice requirements to my trade group?"

Response: All requests for presentations about prior notice are coordinated by FDA's Food Safety and Security Staff in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Requests should be in writing and should include the date, time, duration, and subject of the requested presentation (for example, January 5, 2004, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM, on prior notice regulatory requirements), as well as the location, the identification of the group sponsoring the event or presentation, the targeted audience and expected number of attendees, and a contact name, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Your request should be directed to: Louis J. Carson, Deputy Director, Food Safety and Security Staff (HFS-32), 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD 20740 or faxed to Mr. Carson's attention at: 301-436-2605. The request should be made no later than 60 days before the date of the event.

While we will make every effort to assist, we may not be able to honor all requests for FDA presentations.
